Hi
Pretty simpel I got myself a Nikon, D60 to be specific but there isn't a notice like I have when I insert my usb stick. This is my dmesg output
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I've got the same camera and if you search the forums, people have alot of ideas on how to make apps like digikam and the like recognize this camera. Myself, I got tired of messing around with gphoto rules and then a while later, my camera wasn't being recognized again. I opted for simplicity in that the D60 has an option in the menu settings to have the camera act like a usb mass storage device. Then it's just a simple case of opening up your favorite file manager and transferring pics to a folder in your computer. Then all you have to deal with is hal automounting your usb device but the hal wiki solved that, for me at least.

If you set it to mass storage, then it should behave as any other usb mass storage unit.

I read about that setting 'mass storage' but it isn't on my d60 because its a newer firmware at least other version and this isn't available anymore. They told me on irc too. I found a website about the D60, with screenshots of that setting but I swear this is gone on my recent bought d60!
But this shouldn't be a burdon because at windows its auto accessible...
pfff I just don't understand

If nikon removed the mass storage option (can't understand why...), then use gphoto2 or similar. Adding your user to the camera group should get it to work.
Edit: If they rely removed the mass storage option, then you should lobby to get it back
