Install freeze in VirtualBox

I'm currently in the process of installing ArchLinux 2009.02 i686 in VirtualBox on a Lenovo SL500 ThinkPad.

Installation, seemingly freezes up during the package installation step.

Any Ideas?

1) did you verify the checksum of the image
2) you need to be more descriptive. do you get errors? what do you see in vc7, what do you mean with freeze? does the machine lock up or does the installer just stop? can you kill it? can you make a screenshot, ...

I can confirm this, I'm installing arch in virtualbox and I'm at the installing xorg phase, and every so often I have to ctrl-c and redo the pacman -S xorg because arch (or pacman) just freezes up in the middle of the download. No lights blink or anything so I know something just froze.

EDIT: there's a ticket currently on virtualbox's bug tracker about this issue. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3511

I've installed at least 6 Arches under VirtualBox 2.1.4, and I haven't seen this happen even once.

well, I'm starting to get carpal tunnel over here

could have something to do with the fact that I'm using NAT networking or could be just an incompatibility with my laptop's wireless. I don't know what could cause this issue; all the posts and bug reports about this, I've found, are fairly new though.

Wow, that's a serious bug in that ticket! But it's about the host (windows) rebooting because the guest "does something", that seems to be something completely different then the guest hanging during installation.

Well I am running Arch in a Vbox also and mostly when it comes time to install the packages it looks like it is hanging up, but it really isn't if you check the Vbox tool bar at the bottom where it show you what you are using in the v box you will see that the hard drive icon has a small red dot and sometimes the icon with the 2 screen (network connection) would have a red dot. I would say check those little things and if there is no lights or flashing red or green lights on those 2 icon for more then 5 mins then I guess yeah it is hanging up.

Hey there.

I am pretty new to Linux (jumping in the deep end is more fun), and I also encountered problems while trying to install Arch in VirtualBox with a Vista host. For some reason downloads were simply stopping while I was attempting to install Arch, usually after downloading one or two packages. It appears that what was wrong was using the NAT interface for the network. Switching to the "Host Interface" option solved this issue and the install continued as normal. I also found I had problems with DNS lookups being slow but that was solved by using OpenDNS (*shrug*).

I couldn't say why this would be an issue, but I felt it was a good idea to post here to say what fixed it.

I have installed Arch in VirtualBox on both my home and work systems yesterday and can confirm this exact symptom. Pacman download freezes seemingly randomly and Ctrl-C and try again. I take it this is a new issue based on responses. Will try host interface per above post.

What you can try:
edit /arch/setup
replace:
PACMAN="pacman --root ${DESTDIR} --config /tmp/pacman.conf --noconfirm --noprogressbar"
with:
PACMAN="strace pacman --root ${DESTDIR} --config /tmp/pacman.conf --noconfirm --noprogressbar"

then you can see the strace output on tty7
I'm not sure if strace is installed on the cd though, if not just do "pacman -Sy strace" on the cd.
