cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

cups printer management reports...

"unable to open print file "/var/spool/cups/d00069-001" - Permission denied"

last /var/spool/cups/ file before update was 'c00069' owned by root/sys
file ~/c00066' just minutes earlier is owned by root/daemon

/var/spool/ is owned by root/root

I try to stay very close to system updates, so what could have gone wrong here?
Used KDE print manager to restart print server.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

The update killed my usb printer. I've been up and down
http://localhost:631 adding removing the printer... no luck

Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
Device URI: usb://HP/DeskJet%20845C?serial=CN1811M278SX
kernel: lp: driver loaded but no devices found

I even tried to rollback to the previous cups pkg. That didn't
help either.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

It would have been a touch of class to comment someplace that libtiff was the problem.
I found it from poring over the cups error log set to debug mode.
Printer now works.

Thanks,

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

well the maintainers may not have known it was an issue.

i assume that a newr version of libtiff was needed? If you could pass on the info in a bug report it would be good.  Instead of losing your temper at the community for not knowing your answer in a timely fashion.

on the other hand i will agree that many known solutions to problems are not well announced. i keep finding instances of solutions on the ML with no solution on the front page of the site or on the forum and vice versa. people may not frequent the ML or forum so spreading the new in a wider swath is really needed.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

I didn't lose my temper.
I update frequently and saw the newer libtiff posted, but didn't know it was relevant to the cups issue until I went through the debug log.  So I got a little more education.

I liked your third paragraph better.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

I'm guessing that updating libtiff will fix the
problem? Do I need to reinstall cups?

Didn't reinstall cups.  However, restarted server.  Don't know if that was necessary or not.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

it is usually good practise to restart the cups daemon (or any daemon) after upgrading it or its components. it is often not required but it can eliminate the daemon as an issue if restarting it does not throw any errors.

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

Thanks,

The libtiff update fixed the problem.

How do you set /var/log/cups/error_log to 'debug'

Re: cups-1.1.22-1 update stopped printer

I used the KDE print manager found in Settings.
Print Server>Configure Server --  will call for root login
Select Log (from menu on left) >Log Level>Debug Information
(Detailed Debugging might be an overkill.)
Exit Server Configuration at OK, then Print Server>Restart Server'

You can also find that parameter in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, but it is not as easy.

Hope this helps.
