Hi Everyone
Just wanted to say hi. Have been a Linux user for quite a few years. I learned quite a bit back in the day on Slackware. The last few years since college, I've been doing all my dev. work in Java on Windows, and have not had time to mess around with Linux too much. Furthermore, I've moved around so much that I only keep a laptop these days. Unfortunately, Linux on the laptop is still not up to standards, especially on my latest laptop which is pretty new (Thinkpad t61). Ubunutu is nice, but I just don't have time anymore to spend hours and hours trying to get the fonts to look good, figuring out why the Nvidia drivers are causing hard crashes, Hibernate/Standby issues, etc.
Long story short, I've had a few weeks of free time thanks to the shitty economy and job loss; I've always been interested in VMware, and finally got a chance to try it out on my laptop. I'm really impressed with both VMware and Arch Linux. All the goodness of a *nix command line and tools without all the hassles of X, Nvidia drivers, ugly fonts, etc.
Anyway, just wanted to say a BIG THANKS to the developers. I'll be testing out Arch under VMware for the time being.
Also, I wrote a blog here: http://mrhandsome.org/blog/2009/03/arch … d-windows/ if anyone without any Linux experience needs some help - feel free to email or post a comment on the blog if you need help!

Bill

Very nice ![]()
I do think you were a little over-critical of Linux support, especially when you have a ThinkPad (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installat … inkPad_T61 http://www.linlap.com/wiki/IBM-Lenovo+Thinkpad+T61 http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBM_Thinkpad_T61 http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_Thinkpad_T61 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installin … inkPad_T61 http://www.google.com/search?q=Ubuntu%20T61 ), but w/e ![]()
Also, there are simpler, faster ways of getting a powerful Unix-like environment on Windows. Cygwin, MinGW/MSys, etc. ![]()
Glad you like Arch!

and about vmware, I've used it for a long time, but the package got bulkier and I ended replacing it by virtualbox. It has its issues, but is far faster than wm-workstation on a E4500@2.2GHz, 2 GB RAM. ![]()
that's my two cents.
They say that if you play a Win cd backward you hear satanic messages. That's nothing! 'cause if you play it forwards, it installs windows.
