I have suddenly started to have all sorts of network problems after removing my netgear router (which was having problems itself--I don't know if the problems are related).
Trying to use dhcp I get the following:
[root@esme mike]# dhcpcd eth0
eth0: dhcpcd 4.0.12 starting
eth0: broadcasting for a lease
eth0: offered 153.--.--.-- from 153.--.---.-
eth0: NAK: IP address out of pool from 192.168.1.1
eth0: broadcasting for a lease
which just loops until it times out. I just put in the dashes...192.168.1.1 was my router's address.
Additionally, I'm noticing problems with mpd. I can start it the daemon but cannot connect to it. For example, conky says
Conky: MPD error: host "localhost" not found: Temporary failure in name resolution
So I tried setting in .mpdconf
bind_to_address "127.0.0.1"
Now, I cannot start mpd, I get
can't lookup host "127.0.0.1" at line 65: Address family for hostname not supported
My /etc/hosts file should be okay. It's
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost esme
I also tried setting dhcpcd to not overwrite /etc/resolv.conf. I got the nameservers from ubuntu.
My biggest concern about this is that I popped in an old arch cd and tried to do an net install just to check but it was taking an exorbitant amount of time trying to connect dhcp.
Does any one have any suggestions?

Hmm. Now, you might have to reset your modem. A DHCP server will not recognize a newconnection type unless you have. Don't go about fiddling too much. MPD probably isn't behaving correctly because a proper interface (lo) hasn't been brought up.

Everything (including router). Seems to be working now. I didn't do anything else besides turn it all off for the night. I wonder if there were some issues with the campus network that I am on. I'm still curious how/if the mpd problems were related.

Unlikely. I'm thinking that the networking init-script failed cause of you problem and never brought up lo.
