GeForce2 Go & nvidia 96.43.11 & 2.6.28-ARCH

I surfed this forum and could not find any solutions of my problem. Maybe the direct request can help me
I'm using my old TC1000 TabletPC. it has the GeForce2 Go nvidia chip. And I have ArchLinux on it.
Before I installed Xubuntu with older kernel and with NVIDIA driver 1.0-7185. Everything worked fine for me. But now with 2.6.28 kernel I can not setup nvidia 1.0-7185 driver. Nvidia installer does not like the Linux src

-> License accepted.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li

If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
       driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

So I tried the nvidia 96.43.11. It was installed without any problems. But now when I start X I get only the black screen. No response on mouse & keyboard.

Maybe somebody know how to make love between GeForce2 Go & nvidia 96.43.11 & 2.6.28-ARCH

Re: GeForce2 Go & nvidia 96.43.11 & 2.6.28-ARCH

Woah. Use code tags or PasteBin or something tongue

Anyways, don't using NVIDIA's drivers from their site. Pacman can install the drivers for you, which means everything is managed cleanly and you get automatic updates. The Wiki has more info in the Beginner's Guide, the pages for NVIDIA and X, etc.

pacman -S nvidia=96xx

Oh, sorry, my fault - I didn't see the end of your post, I assumed it was all log. Okay, so we can go from there.

Googling around for 'tc1000 linux' I'm finding quite a bit talking about problems with X. Can you try the nv driver (or maybe nouveau if they support that card, I don't know)? That may or may not be a long-term solution. That Google should also turn up some stuff on getting the NVIDIA driver working, but it's cryptic to me, too..

Re: GeForce2 Go & nvidia 96.43.11 & 2.6.28-ARCH

yes, nv driver works fine. but it does not support rotation. and during switching to CTRL-ALT-F2 there is blinking on the screen. There is no problem with nvidia driver.
I need either to start workin nvidia.ko from legacy 96.43.11 driver or to be able to compile 7185 (the only one that works fine with my GeForce 2 Go card)

It was too late by then. The reason for using the Arch driver pkg is that it knows where to put things on an Arch Linux system. NVidia doesn't. The NV Installer - which offers NO *de-install* - trashed your file system, writing a good number of critical files to the WRONG critical places.

This is a not-that-uncommon mistake made users new to Arch, and I know of no one who's reported back having success recovering from that mistake. I've tried to help a few, myself, having long used NV drivers w/Linux. If any of them worked the issue through, they never reported back about it.

Sorry.  sad

Re: GeForce2 Go & nvidia 96.43.11 & 2.6.28-ARCH

Hello @grndrush!
Do you mean if I reinstall the ARCH and install nvidia driver via pacman (no nv or nvidia drivers from download.nvidia.com) the system could be usable?

daybat -

Sorry to be slow replying.

Yes, that should work fine. Most aren't willing to do a full reinstall - therein being the problem.
