Xorg 1.6 + xf86-video-ati 6.12.0 + kernel26 2.6.29 : no dri !

Hello,

Because I wanted to have Xv with an opensource driver, I upgraded my system (freshly installed) to testing (I own an ati radeon hd 3650).

Since this upgrade, I get these errors in my xorg logs :

(I also tried to add the DRI section with mode 0666)

There is nothing in the /dev/dri/ directory and there is this error in dmesg :

[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
mtrr: no MTRR for d0000000,10000000 found

I tried to come back to the kernel 2.6.28, I also tried tricks I saw on this forum : adding nopat to the kernel commandline, adding acpi=off...  but it didn't change anything.

Also note that before going to testing, I did not had these errors in the xorg log file.

I don't really know what to do next, so I am looking for help on this smile

Thanks you.

Re: Xorg 1.6 + xf86-video-ati 6.12.0 + kernel26 2.6.29 : no dri !

As far as I know, the free drivers never had DRI support for HD cards, so what's the problem here?

Ho, is that it ? I don't know why I was sure it should, because I thought (but I must be wrong) that it was enabled with the previous version not in testing !

Anyway, I have (or not smile) another problem, and I thought it was because of DRI, but maybe it has nothing to do :
In the homepage of radeon, it is said that xf86-video-ati 6.12.0 has EXA and XVideo support for R6xx, but in the xorg logs, it say :

(==) RADEON(0): Will attempt to use R6xx/R7xx EXA support if DRI is enabled.

And nothing special about XVideo.

When I try to play a video with mplayer -vo xv, it says :

[VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read
[VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
[VO_XV] See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
[VO_XV] Try -vo x11.

(Of course x11 is unusable smile

Maybe you are not using recent enough drivers, DRI support for R6xx/R7xx was added quite recently, also I believe you need the DRI section on your xorg.conf otherwise its a no go.
With xserver 1.6 X -configure also added something like load DRI2 and drm (maybe X loads that automagically anyway).
I have the xf86-video-radeonhd-git-r6xx-r7xx working with dri and xv support now with xserver 1.5 but I have also tried with server 1.6 and it was working too (even better than with xserver 1.5 I must say). Can't wait for xserver 1.6 to hit [extra] big_smile

I tried with or without it.

I tried to add them, and it does not change anything.

I tried wit this driver and DRI worked ! But nevertheless, XV still doesn't work !

I think that I must be missing something, anyway, thanks you for your help, I hope someone that understand all the details of these things (I really don't understand all these DRM, DRI, their links with EXA, UXA, XV, etc...) could explain it here and maybe give an idea how to be able, at least, to play a video :)

Anyway, thanks you for your help !

Hmmmm interesting, here's my xorg.conf (generated with X -configure with xserver 1.6 and then adapted for xserver 1.5 as I have downgraded because having [testing] disabled would prevent me from updating my system so I have downgraded to xserver 1.5):

One problem I and others have found is that in Arch32 the appropriate modules need to be loaded manually because X will load the ones shipped with the kernel, on Arch64 it works fine, I didn't ask too much about it because I didn't have time yet to search for similar problems and try to reach a conclusion about the problem. To solve that I have added to /etc/rc.local this

insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/drm.ko
insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/radeon.ko

This is for the driver I'm using which needs a recompiled drm module http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24236 and http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24236

If this doesn't work then I don't know what else can be going wrong. Mind you that there is no 3D acceleration right now for r600 and r700 cards with the open source drivers.

Re: Xorg 1.6 + xf86-video-ati 6.12.0 + kernel26 2.6.29 : no dri !

My problem is with radeon (not hd smile

But if I try to use radeonhd, all is working as expected, by using the PKGBUILD for the git version of drm (with the r6xx-r7xx branch) and the git version of radeonhd (I had to use master instead of the specific branch since the branch has been merged into master).

Also, I removed the drm and the radeon module installed by archlinux kernel to have the other one loaded (like you say in your answer).

With all of this, I have XV and EXA (and no 3D but I don't care smile

Anyway, I don't have any answer for radeon, but at least, I know that radeonhd is working great smile

Thanks !
