Hello ArchCommunity..
I'm using Arch now since a few months and I love it so much. Last week I got a new Laptop (MaxData 4510 iw eco).
The System runs fast and nearly stable, it's a little buggy:
Every day (really every) my system shuts instantly down. There is no schutdown screen or such things, it goes instantly off! Like pulling the AC-Plug out of a desktop-PC.
On some days, there is only one Shutdown, on others (like today -.-) two or three!
There is no specific action, time, CPU-Load or ACPI-Temperature which could be used as an indicator. It happens just sometimes.
After shutdown I looked into the logs with a LiveCD, but there seems to be no errors.
Are there any known bugs or reasons whick can explain such behaviour? I love running this new system at work, and it is kinda frustrating when your system doing things without your control. I think you all know what it feels like
Hope to get some help..
Sincerely,
arma..

Are you sure it is not a hardware fault with your new laptop?
Offline
Dunno.. How can I get this information?
Are there tools to check or is it a case for technical support?
Offline
I'd run memtest on it (from install CD) to check for memory issues first.
Offline
Ok, can I do it from work? I mean, how long does this take?
It has only 1GB Ram.
Offline
You will need to boot to a live CD to run it. It will take about 30min for 1GB RAM (from memory...)
Offline
Ok, I will do so..
After check I'll post the results here. Perhaps it could solve the Problem.
I was going to buy a second Ram-Chip, so if I need a new it is not so bad
Thank you for your fast help..

Well, it's done!
The test has run two times without any errors.
The memory seems to be o.k.!
Are there any other things I could check? Is it perhaps an acpi-event which is missunderstood by acpid?
I don't know enough about linux and PCs to solve such things completely by myself..
Hope, someone could help..
----
I disabled the acpid.. Will run a few days without it and look what happens..
Perhaps it is guilty...
I think this error occures since the installation of this daemon, but not sure.

I had this same issue with my Dell 1720. As time went by the reboots were more frequent. Dell replaced the memory, battery, video card, and everything else including the chip and they never could fix it. They finally sent me a replacement and I never had another shutdown after that.

Well BKJ, this sounds bad XD
I decided a complete reinstallation of my arch, everything worked fine during setup process!
Today there was again this damn shutdow!
This phenomen occurs everytime between 11 and 12 o'clock. IMO this sounds so strange...
I think it is a hardware-issue, can't imagine such behaviour comes from the system.
But before I give it away I want to know definitly (or how far it is possible) that the system isn't guilty.
Which methods are there to check. Are there anyway possibilities?
Hope, someone has a great idea
Sincerely,
arma

There is 2 high possibilities.
The laptop overheats, which sounds like an issue with the fans. -> Send the laptop to warranty repair
I've been personally in charge of fixing and replacing parts of manufacturer's X laptops and problems like this were usually related to the motherboard, or the fans. In any case, I'd suggest you to send the laptop to warranty repair.

@the.armageddon, have you figured anything out yet? I'm having the same problem on my Thinkpad T400. Some things I've noted:
This happens regardless of running on AC-adapter or battery.
However, the problem does not seem to happen in Windows or Linux Mint.
Overheating does not seem to be a problem - I ran the fan full power with CPU idle overnight and it still crashed
Disabling the acpi daemon does not fix things
No logs anywhere
The fact that it's not crashing on Windows or another Linux makes me think it's some sort of software problem, but I don't even know where to start looking. For me, this problem is very recent (started within the past 2 days), but the crashes are becoming more frequent. I'm currently using everything out of the stable repositories with the exception of xorg and the intel driver ... neither of which has had any previous problems that I'm aware of.
So yeah, I hope your situation is improving~ for mine isn't >.>

I'd suggest you to be in touch with IBM if the laptop is warranty device. They have really friendly replacement policy... or so I've heard
