Thinking of installing Arch on my laptop that has 4gb, 64 or 32bit?

The laptop has 4gb of ram, just wondering what the
consensus was on 32bit vs 64bit with 4gb?

There are very few reasons to run 32bit today on a 64bit CPU-the only one left really being: Do any of your apps come only compiled for 32bit, and s the source not available.  That is the only reason, really....there really aren't that many apps left that only come compiled for 32bit--Google apps being one of them.

Now that you have 64-bit flash-player too, 64-bit is probably the best choice. Why have 4 gigs of RAM if one of them is just sitting there doing nothing. Nowadays packages even come first to x86_64 in arch.

I'm running Arch64 and have had no problems thus far.  I'd recommend you go 64-bit.

+1 Same here. KDEmod 4.2 Full install Firefox Flash etc. running like a charm (occasional KDE lockups due to testing repos, beta software, and my penchant for fscking up configuration files)

Thanks all, I installed 64bit and it so far is running very nice.  Only problem I have is the 32bit wine setup from the FR repository hangs when
running winecfg.   Works fine on my desktop though weird.

Okay, seriously, I'm done with this topic. I'm not even going to say my side. Search the forums -- this has been discussed to DEATH tongue

Re: Thinking of installing Arch on my laptop that has 4gb, 64 or 32bit?

Not trying to go against the grain at all here as I am running x64 myself and quite happy. However, although it seems hit or miss, there is a serious bug with Flash 64-bit that crashes each time certain flash embedded pages are open.

It may or may not be a problem for your install but it IS for me and many others and is worth considering. See link http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=67005

Other than that, x64 all the way big_smile

Edit: I see you already have it installed, so do you have flash working also esp the links from the thread I posted?

Flash seems to be working fine so far.  If you know of a certain address that has some embedded flash that causes the problem I can try it out and let you know.

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer seems to be one that always crashes. I am not sure the exact issue as many have NO issues with flash 64 and many others do. You can see my post for more details plus the bug report to Adobe.
