I have 6gbs of RAM installed (3 x 2gb), but ksysguard only reports 5.8gb of ram. Is it normal to have slightly less ram than what is installed?

Do you have a dedicated video card or an integrated one? An integrated one might eat up your RAM.
Or it might be a conversion between MiB and MB...
What does "free -m" reports?

Yes, I'm quite sure it's normal. There are a few reasons why it would show less.
As the above poster said, different conventions (but I must include possible mis-communications, intentional or otherwise, as far as the card's reported abilities when you bought it go) and integrated video take some ram. Though, to expand on that, even some non-integrated video takes up ram. Some/many motherboards use a little bit of the system ram to boost performance with the video card. How much it takes is usually configurable in the bios, somewhere between 64-256 megs or so.

Thanks for the replies. It was a case of me mistaking GiB to be GB.
