xfce + compiz works great for me... i have it set up to mimic gnome style panels, for some reason I liked the layout...  lack of a network browser in thunar leeds me to keep nautilus around though...

It may not be what you're looking for, but you can use fuse (ssh through sshfs and ftp through curlftpfs) and smbclient (for Windows shares) to mount different network file systems. From there you should be able to use Thunar to browser these file systems.

I think that is the first question everyone needs to ask himself before deciding what kind of GUI he wants. This is what people overlook and then they get unhappy later.

I prefer productivity, so I prefer StumpWM or wmii
