This only happens when X is running. If I unplug the AC power while X is running, the screen goes black (not off, the backlight remains on, and I'm pretty sure X continues running normally because I can change the backlight brightness with keyboard shortcuts). This also happens when I plug in AC power after starting up on battery power. Plugging or unplugging AC power after the screen goes black doesn't change anything, I have to restart X (ctrl-alt-backspace) in order to fix it.
Also, I'm using GNOME, and I have gone into System>Preferences>Power Management and changed every conceivable setting for both AC and Battery Power in order to attempt to fix this. It hasn't changed anything.

Sounds like more of a hardware issue than a software issue. Was this also happening in Windows at all?
