FWIW, NONE of the suggestions in this thread worked for me on my i686 install. Haven't checked my 64-bit install yet (unless the "lm" flag MEANS 32-bit, not 64).

What I do is:

sudo dmidecode --type processor

And I get some information:

alright im starting to get irritated with all of the conflicting information

sudo dmidecode --type processor

when i do this it says nothing about 64bit compatable (which leads me to believe this is not a 64 bit processor)

grep flags /proc/cpuinfo

when i do this i can see the lm flag ( which says that it is 64bit, right?)

just try to boot the x86_64 install-iso wink

i can boot it fine but it also boots on my older machine which im sure is not 64bit

lastly i looked up my processor on the manufacturers website and there are three different versions of the same thing  "T2310"  one of which says its 64bit

so wtf

would somebody please give me a straight answer, becasue the tiny little trolls that live inside my laptop are of absolutely no help at all

hmm, if I trie to boot the 64bit liveCD I get an error like this.
"kernel needs a x86_64 CPU but only i686 CPU detected"
