Looking for the right emulator

I've been looking around for a while for a solution to this problem, but haven't been able to understand enough of what I've read to know the answer.

I have a windows program I'd like to be able to run while booted in linux.  It requires the latest .NET libraries, which of course aren't in wine.  I haven't actually tried, but does anyone know if they can even be installed in wine?

Another option I've looked at is a virtual server (probably vmware, since everything is 64 bit and virtualbox apparantly doesn't do 64 bit?), but I'm not clear on exactly how those work.  Can I use that with an already established partition, or would I have to reinstall the OS inside of vmware?  Does anyone know of a good place to understand what I'm doing when I install?  (The wiki has a great explanation of what to do, but I'm not clear exactly what I'm doing, nor does it seem to be entirely up to date.)

Re: Looking for the right emulator

I should add that the program does not seem to work with mono installed in wine, and installing the .NET framework gets to the download page and stops.  (Perhaps wine isn't accessing the network properly?)

According to the App db at winehq.org ver. 2.0 of the framework is installable, and .NET apps *might* work...Depends on the app.  See here :

Yes, VMWare supports running from an already installed OS on a seperate partition.  But I don't think it's exactly recommended.  You could always use VMWare Converter to create a virtual machine from your existing Windows install, then use that VM to test.

Does anyone know of a good place to understand what I'm doing when I install?

Assuming you do decide to use vmware, then their documentation is a very good place to start.  Documentation for VMWare Workstation, Converter and Server ( The free version ) can be found here :

http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/converter_pubs.html

How are you trying to install the Framework ?  There is a standalone installer that doesn't need access to a network to install.  Just download the .exe from MS + run via Wine.
