I haven't configured my box for video over HDMI yet - I did set the BIOS to output over HDMI though as primary output (although it still happily talks to my 19" LCD on the DVI output, despite the BIOS claiming I can do only DVI + VGA or HDMI + VGA...).
My motherboard has a 780G chipset, and alsa knows about the sound interface over HDMI, and at least 2.6.28 supports it. I can configure it with alsaconf and alsamixer offers controls - albeit limited, just on/off, but I suppose that's the point, not sure if other people have sliders for the volume.

My notebook has dvi and hdmi outputs (I don't own any device with hdmi input so I cannot test that). I have found that the easiest way is to start X with everything plugged in, it will pick the resolution that best fits all displays and clone the output to all of them.
Sound should be possible over hdmi, when I used alsa it did recognize the hdmi output, I guess it shouldn't be too hard to make it all work. Now I use oss and I have no idea if any of the mix outputs is hdmi.
If you use proprietary drivers then those should be able to help you set all outputs (video related) very easily, if you use open source drivers then xrandr is what you want. I find xrandr can be a little puzzling to use at first, it just takes some runs of trial and error until one figures out how things work.

I use HDMI out with xf86-video-intel with no xorg.conf. X did it automagically. Plugged it in, turned it on, was good to go. Sound over HDMI I have not yet figured out though.

I can get screen to display desktop, but panel is off screen so thought res was too high but if you lower it fonts etc go too large and its horrible to view
The board has nvidia [onboard graf!] so nvidia-config works but it will not allow me to adjust display
26" tft looks on the cards :-)

Did you try messing with the tv picture stretching settings. Mine had a couple options like wide, full screen, blah blah, etc. and I picked the one that didnt hide the panel.

Thats the odd thing my tv has an icon in menu for screen adjustment but its greyed out [does not work!] so was thinking of changing tv getting one with vga input or a large tft
Do not watch a great deal of television and with the addition of a tv card could watch tv via pc
Anyway going to try hooking up box again over the weekend see what I can do
