Compiz starts with blank screen

When I was using the 2.26.25 kernel compiz would work just fine, but now that I've reinstalled with the 2.26.28 kernel it doesn't seem to (I screwed up when trying to upgrade the kernel, and that's why I had to reinstall)

when greping my Xorg.0.log, I found (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not dri capable
when running it with "dbus-launch fusion-icon" it still gets blank screen. I have the entire compiz-fusion group installed, as well as compiz-manager.

when running fusion icon or compiz manager from commandline, I get an error that Xgl is missing, which is crazy, because I have it installed. Also seems like AIGLX might not be working...

video card is ATI Radeon 7000, and I do have xf86-video-ati installed
