I have seen a bunch of nice simple scripts that check to see if you have any unread messages in your gmail inbox, but none for hotmail. Am I just missing them or do they not exist?

They probably don't exist, since most scripts I saw use gmail's RSS email feed, or IMAP, neither of which hotmail offers. Hotmail actually only recently started offering POP3 for email clients, so maybe a script will show up in the near future utilizing POP3 to call number of unread emails or so from hotmail, but I'm not sure.
Hope that helps?
