this might be a hardware issue, but i'm a newbie. recently, i bought an acer x203w 20 inch lcd monitor which works beautifully on 1680x1050 native resolution, but the fullscreen console text is very fuzzy and unclear. i get the same problem before i even get to boot into linux (the bios screen and the grub os selection screen show the same fuzzy text). i don't get the fuzziness if i use a vga input, but i lose the sharpness that comes with dvi. is there a way to fix this issue without compromising dvi? my video card is nvidia ti4400 and my system is fully updated.

There is a section in the archlinux beginners guide that recommends installing certain fonts for lcd monitors to avoid this issue. I ran into a similar problem when using conky and it turned out I had to enable some option in xorg. I hope I'm not getting acronyms confused but I think the option was dbe. I'd take your issue up with one of those *box guru's they seriously know how to buff polish a screen with only vesa.
Reading over what you said again I did recall a problem with an amd system using a nvidia card before and the console was completely unreadable. I think I added some text options to the grub bootline and it cleared up.

I have an nvidia geforce 7300 (mfg by asus) and have the same issue. If I use the vga plug bios and console are crisp but X is blurry; if I use the dvi plug bios and console are blurry but X is crisp. Go figure. I use dvi.

You could try setting up the framebuffer console at the native resolution. I think all you have to do is add the correct vga= option to grub, but I'm not sure.

setting the framebuffer resolution helps. i still get fuzzy text on the os selection screen, but i guess i can live with that. thanks.
