when I try to change my sound levels I get this error:
michael@Michael's_Arch_Box:/dev/snd$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
also when I open XMMS or any other music player I get a 'no soundcard detected' error
any help would be great

Hi,
I have the same problem, I believe it was caused by system upgrade about 10 days ago.
lspci identifies my sound cards as :
Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
If this happen I just restart the PC (once or more times) and it works. Another strange thing is that sometimes flash player in opera doesn't play sound... But this is not so big problem to me...

I would start with lspci to check the sound card is detected. Then I would give OSSv4 a go instead of alsa, lately it seems alsa has been causing more headaches than it should.

I can confirm similar problem -- my sound card works but system freezes randomly. There is bunch of things I suspected and finally decided it's sound problem. Started to happen somewhere around latest kernel update.
Edit: getting back to fallback kernel does not solve this problem so it's something that got updated with kernel. I was shocked for a several days because nobody else seemed to have similar problem.

I do asume that you are a memeber of the audio group? And that you have tried alsamixer as root?

Oss was the only thing I have not tried. Looks like that everything works with oss instead of alsa. Looks like there is really some serious problem with alsa.

I have checked the group thing and also tried alsamixer as root.
lspci gives same soundcard as TiborB seems to have been nroken by upgrade.
no time now to try OSSv4 but will sometime this week when I have time
thanks for the quick response and help

I had a simmilar issue with the device (Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)) also caused by the kernel update I think.
Problem description:
-lspci lists my device, but it is not possible to play audio via alsa(no soundcard detected);
-when trying to reload the kernel module(modprobe snd_hda_intel) it is not found.
Solution:
simmilar problem: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61379
--> reinstall kernel and alsa(pacman -S kernel26 alsa-lib); reload kernelmodules
now alsa works fine again..

well, OSS works for me and I don't see any disadvantage, so it'll stay that way until something goes wrong

Re-adding myself to the audio group fixed the problem for me.
