Missing man page X(7)

Many X-related man pages (for example, Xserver(1), Xorg(1)) refer to man page X(7), which doesn't exist on my clean ArchLinux installation:

$ man X
No manual entry for X
$ man 7 X
No manual entry for X in section 7

I found out that Ubuntu have the same problem (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/292041), which can be solved by installation of Debian-specific package 'xorg-docs'. Unfortunately I didn't find any similar packages in ArchLinux repos.

How can I solve this problem in ArchLinux? Should I open bug?

I have installed these packages for X server:

$ pacman -Qs xorg | grep local
local/hwd 5.4.3-1 [0,12 MB]
local/xorg-apps 7.4-1 [1,77 MB]
local/xorg-font-utils 7.4-1 [0,45 MB]
local/xorg-fonts-100dpi 1.0.1-1 [12,27 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-fonts-75dpi 1.0.1-2 [10,73 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-fonts-alias 1.0.1-1 [0,05 MB]
local/xorg-fonts-cyrillic 1.0.0-3 [0,38 MB]
local/xorg-fonts-encodings 1.0.2-2 [0,64 MB]
local/xorg-fonts-misc 1.0.0-3 [6,76 MB]
local/xorg-res-utils 1.0.3-2 [0,14 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-server 1.5.3-4 [11,57 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-server-utils 7.4-2 [0,35 MB]
local/xorg-twm 1.0.4-2 [0,24 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-utils 7.4-2 [0,24 MB]
local/xorg-xauth 1.0.3-1 [0,07 MB]
local/xorg-xinit 1.1.1-1 [0,05 MB] (xorg)
local/xorg-xkb-utils 7.4-1 [0,32 MB]

P.S. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.

Re: Missing man page X(7)

X is undocumented, iirc.

In Ubuntu it tells you;

pubuntu@pubuntu:~$ man X
No manual entry for X
See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available.
pubuntu@pubuntu:~$

(running Portable Ubuntu atm, btw.)

try "man undocumented", it should tell you why

Re: Missing man page X(7)

X is perfectly documented! See here for example. Ubuntu have the same bug (I don't think it's a feature) too, see link to bug report in my first message. But in ubuntu user can install package 'xorg-docs', which has missed man page X(7), see discussion in bug report.

Anyway, I opened bug report #14187 for ArchLinux.

Re: Missing man page X(7)

hmm, odd.

Any distro I have ever used seems to not have it included by default. Either that or on half a dozen other distros, I've never checked :S

Re: Missing man page X(7)

It seems that man page for X(7) is one of few files that was lost somewhere in process of evolution of all X-related crap and Linux distros. And since reading X-related man pages is not popular activity of average linux-user, developers of distros doesn't hurry to fix that problem.

But of course such situation is wrong! X(7) contains important imformation about formats of DISPLAY variable values, -geometry specifiers, font names, colors, X server boot sequence and so on. I'd say it's the MOST important man page in all X-related pages. Furthermore, many other man pages refer to this missing page. Therefore we can say almost all modern Linux distros are in inconsistent state in this regard.

I came in Linux world from Windows not long ago. How new users can learn new OS if there are missing pieces of OS? It's one of many reasons why we have to spend all free time trying to find answers in miriads of Linux-related blogs, forums, etc.

I hope builders of Linux distros will treat documentation with more respect.

Re: Missing man page X(7)

I believe you are looking for 'man xorg'.

Edit: sorry I didn't read carefully, you are right it does refer to a section 7 page for X.

Not arch's fault if it isn't supplied in the standard source tarball from upstream. Anway, less ranting more bug reporting please smile

Re: Missing man page X(7)

Since you now can run Xorg without a conf, do you really need that section?

Re: Missing man page X(7)

Not everyone has X running nicely by default Cheesebaron. Lots of people need some tweaks to get it running right wink.

Re: Missing man page X(7)

Now that xorg-docs is available in ArchLinux repos, thanks to Kolyan (I guess). This thread can be marked as solved.
