is it asking too much to be able to suspend in linux?

I posted over in laptop issues but perhaps there is little to no traffic in that area...  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 70#p527670

I am trying to get resume working on the kde suspend/resume.  the /var/log/pm-suspend.log shows no errors that i can see.

any thoughts?

Have you tried adding the resume hook as shown here?  You can also try removing the autodetect hook.

I should clarify, I am trying to suspend to ram.
I do have that hook, but I thought that only applied if trying to suspend to disk.

Does suspend-2-ram work?

I just tried running "s2ram" (via sudo s2ram -f) and I got the same result: unable to read the root disk

In case anyone knows something particular to my hardware, here's my lspci:

I am running the default kernel now.  I tried with standard updates, and also tried upgrades from testing with the same result

Strange. I've just tried, because I've remembered having same problems, but now it works.
I can suspend to RAM from both Kick-Off and "battery" widget.
I have 2.6.28 kernel and KDE4.2.2.
And I don't even have resume in HOOKS.

But I do have desktop instead of laptop.
But hardware is quite similar to yours, yours is still better:

its funny how "better" hardware in linux can often translate to worse stability and performance  tongue

thanks for the comment, that may indicate that updates will be around the corner to fix my problem
