increase Virtual size without xorg.conf???

I'm running arch without an xorg.conf on two of my boxes and I'd like to keep it that way..

However,

xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS --auto

returns

xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1600x1600 (desired size 2624x1200)

and as far as I know, adding a Virtual line to xorg.conf is the only way to fix it. Can this be done without an xorg.conf??

Not to my knowledge unfortunately. You'll just have to add the line to the xorg.conf and then restart. That's what I always do. It's not difficult either. In the Display subsection of the Device section, just add the line

Virtual 2624 1200

that'll give you the result that you want. Doesn't take long.
