badblocks>24hrs

hey I wanted to check my 40gib hd using badblocks.
It started making clicking sounds after 3 hours and its now past 24hrs. still clicking away.
it keeps writing to the badblock file so I dont think its frozen or anything.
Is this supposed to happen?
