[SOLVED]screensaver does it's own thing.

Hi,

I have a minor glitch with gnome screensaver.
I set it to start after 25 mins but if I go off to do something it kicks in after about one minute.
I tried using xscreensavers instead but they either did not start or had a similar problem.
dpms is set to true but putting time value options in did not help.
This is arch 64 bit.
I know it's not bad..I still have a screensaver...
but it would be interesting to discover the cause of this unwanted behaviour.
Gnome power manager doesn't seem to work at all when I tried using that instead.

Check out http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69402. Removing gnome-screensaver and using xscreensaver instead should actually work though (at least for me and some others).

Re: [SOLVED]screensaver does it's own thing.

Hi Nepherte,

Thanks for the reply.
I tried that. The xscreensavers still kicked at the wrong time and also had an error across the top:
'Missing generic event extension on display 0.0'
Which apparently means that my xserver does not have xga support. This should be fixed in the next release of xserver.

I don't suppose it matters if it starts after five mins of inactivity, it might be better for my screen.
Then when another xserver comes along I can use xscreensavers.
There are compiz screensavers but they require something called 'git', which the website said might be unstable.
I could reinstall gnome but it's not worth that just for a screensaver.
It's just that gnome-screensaver has about 4 screensavers and I don't like them.

The other thing I remember is when I uninstalled gnome-screensaver (before all this) there was a warning something about pam.d has been copied.

When you install xscreensaver, all screensaver is compatible in gnome-screensaver. After that, you can choose cca 100 screensaver in gnome-screensaver.
Check settings with gconf-editor in /apps/gnome-screensaver

Sokac..Thank you Sir.
That's fixed it.
I've never used gconf until now but it's very useful. (I can't help thinking of registry editor lol).
Also I unticked Totem screensaver in there which probably helps.
