@venky80
After kernel upgrades I often have to do an
# alsaconf
and have my card reconfigured.

I think I will be affected by this, since I upgraded to the kernel 2.6.29 and alsa spit some errors about my soundcard:
00:14.2 Class 0403: ATI Technologies Inc.|SB600 Audio Controller (snd-hda-intel)
00:14.3 Class 0601: ATI Technologies Inc.|SB600 Audio Controller (unknown)
I had to downgrade to kernel 2.6.28, because catalyst does not support 2.6.29 yet, so I couldn't test anything.

Hello, I'm having the same problem after updating to 2.6.29 on my netbook. It has an hda intel sound.

It's supposed to be showing HDA Intel but pcsp shows up hence I only here some whistling on my netbook. Testing the sound on kdemod (System Settings - Multimedia - Driver Preference - Audio Output) Hda Intel is there and I can here a sound when testing it. It was already the one I preferred but still no correct sound output. Also I've already did an #alsaconf and selected HDA Intel but to no luck as well...:(

I had the exact same problem, and I solved it by:
blacklisting the "snd_pcsp" module in the MODULES array of my rc.conf

The next time you boot again, your problem should be solved:)

Unfortunately, I don't have "snd_pcsp" on my rc.conf..:(

then just add it
MODULES=(!snd_pcsp)
the ! is the essential part here
