I have upgraded my system after a week of not upgradeing at all. One of the things updated was alsa. After reboot everithing was good until alsa loaded. When alsa loaded a very strong static noise apeard on my speakers, and its constantly there. Until now a had no problems with alsa. Its very anoying, since I constantly listen to music. What can I do?
Edit: I have no microphone connected and every channel except Master, PCM, Front, Surround, Center, LFE and CD is muted. And, yes, it's a 5.1 system, and its not the speakers.
Edit #2: Now trying oss, and it 'works' ok, in a sence that I can get all the speakers to work and play soung with osstest. The problem now is that amarok plays music only on the 2 front speakers.

I evan reinstalled the whole system, but no luck there (didn't really think it would help, but it whas worth a shot...at least my root partition is now finaly ext4). It realy anoying. I've tryed oss, but still no luck. The osstest went ok the first time, but then the test 'could't find the device'...all but the 'front' device, and you can imagine how fun it is to listen to music with only your front speakers working :-( I'm desperate

I just added !snd_pcsp to modules in /etc/rc.conf to blacklist the pc speaker, and my problem went away. Maybe that will help for you.

no....I did that from the start. But, my noise vent away when i started tvtime. my tv card uses the CD input on the sound card, so I gues it's gota do something with the CD input. I'll play with that when I wake up...now i'm just gona go to bed...bye

I have same issue with my AC97 onboard audio (high pitched screeching instead of sound I expect).
I can confirm however that blacklisting snd_pcsp functions as workaround.
