Back around 2001 or so when i still used windows I got my first surround sound card. It came with software along with the drivers which allowed for different special effects to sort of fake environmental sounds. So for example you could make your system sound like it was inside of a large arena, or a padded room...one was i think underwater...ect.
It was neat because it added different kinds echo which was cool to have with music or other non 5.1 audio, to get a more 3d effect. Is there any such software that would work like this with Alsa? I dont mean just applying effects to one or 2 things (like jackd can do), I'd like to do this sort of thing system wide if possible.

You're probably referring to Creative Labs' EAX. Linux audio drivers don't provide an interface for EAX.
Best bet is LADSPA - see my ALSA config for examples.

I dont think it was something specific to creative labs, because i've never own a CL sound card. The first time i used this sort of thing was with a cheap $40 or so 4.1 channel sound card.
But thanks for the config, it looks like it will help a bit.
