Inspiron 1100 (82845G/GL "Brookdale" IGP) and xf86-video-intel problem

Weird Things (TM) are happening with this driver. I have the "-newest" version installed as the others refuse even to start. Briefly, the only way the driver works is if I comment out the "AutoAddDevices" "False" line in xorg.conf, but that makes every keypress appear 3 times. If I leave it there, however, the screen is corrupted beyond belief.

From looking at Xorg.0.log, leaving the line there makes X unable to load some kind of video bus. Asking for Triple Buffering and Backing Store also tends to either corrupt or blank the screen when X is started, and I can only rarely get a visible console back with ctrl-alt-backspace (though I can still ctrl-alt-del from the blank console).

I only had any success at all after manually loading the i810, i830, and i915 modules. Which of these do I need for this chipset? And if I only need one, why does agpgart and the kernel drm happily snaffle up all three?

Briefly: Please help. I don't know what's going on.
