bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

3 problems: bus error, firefox, and gaim

i picked up a arch 7 beta 2 disk and installed (with xfs -- bad choice?)  other than locate not working everything was smooth

->no "locate" or "updatedb" -- i added a group and things worked (not a good thing to do?)

then i pacman'ed k3b and koffice (for whatever reason i use enlightenment as WM)

koffice gave a bus error (i think) so i booted into windows -- had to get the homework done (powerppt file and i didn't want to go through the openoffice install)

when i went back, it took a very long time to boot, taking its time and making funny noises on updating shared libraries, eventually it plopped out an error message:
bus error  on some line in functions

i logged in and ran ldconfig and ldconfig.. both made the same funny noises as before and took a long time to complete

09:16:27 will@~ $ sudo updatedb
09:22:25 will@~ $ sudo ldconfig
09:22:54 will@~ $ kword
Bus error

along with this.. i tried to update firefox (through firefox) -- said it couldn't do it as user, so i did it as root. it updated but i lost my bookmarks toolbar and cant set the homepage. also the back/forward buttons don't work
so through pacman i uninstalled, and then installed again.. now i can't middle clikc for a new tab nor can i rightclick->open in new tab

yet another problem, but i think this ones not unusual: gaim has no spell check.. the first version i had on gave an error message in the terminal about gtk-spell.. i don't get those anymore but it still doesn't highlight misspelled words
(i compiled gaim myself, and still no spell checking...... i don't know what im doing )

does anyone know whats going on with the bus error/ldconfig/updatedb thing
how to get a working version of firefox
and/or how to get spellchecking in gaim

sorry about the length and for potentially missing any of this covered somewhere else
thanks in advance

Re: bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

does this computer also hold the windows you mention? did the computer make any strange noise sor perform oddly when booted into windows? is there something special about your computer guts that could give us a clue (ie sata, scsi, etc)?

i would tend to say it sounds like your computer is doomed but who knows.

Re: bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

always amassed with the speed things are replied to on this board, thank you

sorry for the ambiguity/vagueness

its (this year's) the college issue IBM T42 laptop and is dual booting into a slow ugly.. but functioning windows

strange noise sounds like its going for the harddive ...  its like 2 double clicks  i don't think i've heard it while running windows
it did happen when i was running gentoo  (gentoo cowers behind archlinux)  and i didn't hear it arch before trying koffice

gentoo was reinfs and arch is on xfs  (if its doing something with the harddrive, could it have anything to do with that?)

the college has a "if you say its accidental it doesn't cost anything to replace" policy .. but it took me a while to figure out engage  :?

Re: bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

Could be a broken hd with (very) bad sectors in the second part of the hd. You should backup everything valuable and then check the whole hd.

Re: bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

You could try fsck -c on the suspicious partitions, or use `badblocks` directly (see man badblocks for more info).

Re: bus error on start up: /etc/rc.d/functions fails

as usual, thanks for the fast responses and patience

[root@ufck will]# fsck -c
fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
fsck: cannot check /dev/discs/disc0/part6: fsck.xfs not found
fsck: cannot check /dev/discs/disc0/part6: fsck.xfs not found

hey.. thats probably not cool, so i tried badblocks

[root@ufck will]# cat /etc/fstab
......

/dev/discs/disc0/part6 / xfs defaults 0 1

....
[root@ufck will]# badblocks /dev/discs/disc0/part6

Install the xfsprogs package to get your fsck.xfs binary.
