dell xps M1730 fan won't shut off

Whenever my temp gets to around 60C, the fans go on full blast and don't shut off, even after it cools off to its normal temperature (around 50C). This happens whenever I'm watching a flash video for a few minutes, or when I'm playing a game (doom even!). The same thing happens on windows 7, I'm not sure if it happens on vista since I wiped my drives to install arch as soon as I got the laptop.

Any ideas? I just don't know where to start hmm

Re: dell xps M1730 fan won't shut off

Try using the i8k deamon (install from aur).

It comes with a very nice gkrellm plugin( "i8krellm" ), or you can use "i8kgui" -- google for more info and what not. This allows you to manually or automatically control fan speeds.

Also, you could try dellfand, if i8k doesnt do it for you. Again, google for more info big_smile

Oh, and as a final note; after you have installed the i8kfan/i8kutils packages and the i8kgui or gkrellm plugin, dont forget to "#modprobe i8k" to get the deamon up - so that it will work! big_smile

Good luck wink
