I'm running 64bit arch and i just upgraded to the new catalyst drivers from AUR (9.4). When I try to run xorg now, it fails (screen just goes black and I can't switch to any of the vcs or kill X). The X log file says that it can't load the glx module because it doesn't exist. I'm not entirely clear on modules and how they work, but what should I do to try and get X working?

What graphics card do you have ?

I would just like to mention that I am having similar errors with catalyst 9.3 obtained from ATI (haven't tried AUR yet). Im told the modules glx, dri and fglrx are missing.

I'm running a Radeon HD 4870 x2. I've been trying some things, and now I dont get the missing glx error. I do get these errors:
(EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) fglrx(0): Unknown EDID version 0
Though it appears that X keeps going past all three of these. Here's my entire log: http://pastebin.com/f5153ff39 . Here's the xorg.conf file aticonfig generated with the unused device, monitor, and screen sections commented out: http://pastebin.com/f1e765d83 .
Any help on where to go next would really be appreciated, I've been at this for over a day now.
jun, I think the wiki discourages getting the drivers from the amd site directly, though given the success (or lack thereof) I'm having with the AUR drivers, I can't say (personally) that they're any better.

I had the same problem, bu it solved itself when I removed the old drivers that earlier had been in the extra? repository, and installed the 9.4 version again. So for me it seemes like the problem came as a result of installing the 9.4 version from AUR on top of the old 8.6ish version from extra.
I discovered the problem after I had installed the 9.4 version, but pacman -Qs catalyst still reported 8.6 or something. Do a pacman -Qs catalyst to see what version that is reported. And try to remove catalyst and install them again.
According to this, you also need the xorg-server version 1.6. But mine works fine under 1.5.3-4, except that I think my 3D score is pretty low. I only get just above 1000 in glxgears with a ATI Radeon HD 3470 on a Lenovo T400.

hmm.... I'll try that when I get home. I think i may have checked and i dont think the old catalyst drivers were there but I'll double check anyway.
I managed to get the dri and record errors to go away by not telling it to load record and explicitly telling it to not load dri2. From what I understand they're not terribly neccesary, but I could be wrong. The only error remaining is the edid error, which I think might have more to do with the problem, but again, I'm really making blind guesses here.
i'll also check my xorg version, I used to have 1.6 installed but i downgraded it when I temporarily decided to use radeonhd instead of catalyst.

I think the problem is related to forcing install of xorg-server 1.6. I remember it was complaining about some files regarding DRM.... but, I'm not sure.
The lazy fix: reinstall catalyst and catalyst-utils (I think the latter is not necessary, but I put it too):
yaourt -S catalyst catalyst-utils
