X errors

When I try to start X, I get the following messages:

(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed

Sometimes the IO error is:

waiting for X server to shut down XIO: fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server ":0.0"

instead. Before this happens, the screen will flash a couple of times, display an X in the middle of the screen, then go back to display the errors. Any idea why this happens? I installed everything I need for my Intel card (I think), and I ran hwd to setup the config file.

If you need the contents of any files, please try to be specific because I'm not really able to copy and paste (unless someone can show me a working program to view ext3 partitions in Windows).

Re: X errors

No responses? Considering switching to another distro now to be honest...

Re: X errors

What are you using to start X? Occasionally when "xinit" gives me goofy errors I use "startx" and vice versa. Feels like it just sometimes isn't happy with me and needs some extra encouragement.

Re: X errors

@p4bz: Wow! Gave it a lot of time there! Search on the forums and see about the answer. I have no idea myself. But Arch is a distro that caters well to people that are patient and try to solve their own issues. It's also no a distro for those not wanting to "tinker" a bit as well. Anyway, I don't know if it applies to you, but 10 seconds of searching produced this:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=54823

and there's another link in there, too.

Re: X errors

The

Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".

line makes me belive you're running xorg-server 1.5.x. Am I right? If yes try updating do xorg-server 1.6.
