Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

You-da-Man, rasat !!

From this sys-adm's point-a-view, ... you're making my job better an' easier to roll-out Arch to the masses( and to the miss's, ...if get what I mean).

I'll sit an 'play/tweak' my own machine all day/night.  But when I'm work'n and need to _get_the_job_done_, your tools are the *bomb*.

Thanx for the hard work and, as ever, thanx to all the devel's and contrib'ers to Arch.

What a 'discovery / learn'n-orgy' this distro is turn'n out to be!!

Cheers.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

The experimental phase of hwd.exp is over and I have uploaded the "real hwd" (hwd-1.2) smile. If asked, version 1.0 is for liveCD 0.2 which includes modem installer requiring a customized kernel linux-2.4.20-hwd.w4l (not uploaded).

<b>What's new in hwd-1.2:</b>
1. Two display modes (S) simple and (E) expert.
2. New layout.
3. Warns if XF86Config-4 already exists.

Here is a new website for Hwd (with screenshot):

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

the hwd works great.  smile

When installing it, it had conflicts with my hotplug installation.

I forced the install though, and both seem to be working. The hotplug package is rather old, and I assume that this uses a newer version of hotplug?

If it does, Im sure some people would appreciate you making a stand-alone updated hotplug package.

Also, would it be possible for the hwd to detect if you have the official nvidia drivers installed and to use that instead of the "nv" driver.

Good you brought up these points before uploading hwd-1.2 to AL's incoming server. I will make it dependent on AL's hotplug package (currently in unoffical) to avoid future conflict. About "nvidia" driver I have to check on latest Knoppix hwdata package. Currently hwd is using hwdata from Knoppix 3.1 which is quite old.

PS.
If anyone missed the 2nd page of this topic, Hwd-1.2 is uploaded:

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I can't wait to test this. Well actually I will have to, at least untill tomorrow. I just have a comment on the new hwd page:

Simplest way to load modules shown by Hwd is to add them in /etc/rc.local.

Example:
modprobe cs46xx
modprobe usb-uhci

It might also be good to mention the option of using the modules array in rc.conf (for Arch that is).

I never used modules array in rc.conf though often noticed on forum. How does it work... give an example.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

If you have rc.conf marked as NoUpgrade in pacman conf (an have had it so since sometimes in spring when it was added) you might not have the modules array in you rc.conf. If so either remove it from NoUpgrade and pacman -Syu (and fix it) or simply add it manually.

MODULES=(ide-scsi sis900)

That loads the ide-scsi module, then the sis900 module. Some modules might need tinkering in modules.conf, but that is no different from loading them in rc.local I would think.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

Thanks Mork II and contrasutra for your input. Hwd-1.3.1 is uploaded and also in AL's incoming server.

Hwd is dependent on hotplug which is included in the tarball and also is available in unofficial and a newer version in incoming (hotplug-2003_08_05).

Hwd-1.3.1 includes latest hwdata-0.85-2 (25-July-2003) data files, which hopefully shows the official nvidia drivers. My SIS vga card is now corrected to "sis" and not "ves" as it did earlier.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

There seem to be a problem in hotplug (both in new and older version). After install it asks to"Add hotplug to rc.conf to run it at start up" DON'T add. To run Hwd only, no boot start up is needed. Hwd starts hotplug by itself and works fine with both hotplug versions (new and old).

I have uploaded hwd-1.4 because the dependency with hotplug didn't work. I made an independent hotplug for hwd-1.4. This allows Hwd to run on its own. Also /usr/sbin/mkxf86config is updated.

http://amlug.org/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html

Hwd-1.4 is also uploaded in incoming

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I installed hwd-1.4 but it didn't recognize my Iomega USB HDD until I added usb-storage to the modules section of /etc/rc.conf. Then hwd did recognize all the partitions on the USB device. BTY, I use the AL scsi kernel.

To be honest, hwd-14 didn't work out as what I expected. I had to redo the hwd script when not running properly on its own hotplug engine. Kernel controls hotplug and accepts /sbin/hotplug only (according to my understanding).... not hotplug.hwd what I made.

Version hwd-1.5-1 is uploaded. No dependency on hotplug as long as user doesn't need to detect USB devices (USB mice, storage, etc.). I consider this a stable version... lets hope no bugs are found to spoil my consideration smile. I will wait few days before uploading in incoming.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I think this script should be included in the installer, cause when you install in a PC you don't know, you don't always know what hardware and modules it uses. Maybe it should be an optional item in the installer.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

Those who want an auto update of hwd, add the following lines in /etc/pacman.conf

[contrasutra]
Server = ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/tur/contrasutra

Run:
# pacman -Syu

For new install:
# pacman -S hwd

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

For your information, hwd-1.6-2 doesn't work well with kernel 2.6.x. Version 1.7 will do the support.... still working on it. The new version will include option for both 2.4.x and 2.6.x.

The new hwd-2.0 is uploaded in amlug server.
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html

The new series 2.x supports both kernel 2.4.x and 2.6.x. It has a new layout and manual setup guide. It generates one "howto" man page as per detected hardwares and modules providing a detail description how to configure both manually and to start at boot-up in Arch way.

The manual setup guide (howto) as a man page and also the system in general has lot of scope for improvement, so suggestion and feedback are welcome. I have setup one temporary wiki page for this purpose:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HwdSuggestion

Nicely done! New hwd is cool (I almost forgot that I have firewire in my machine :-)) I've also added some suggestions (mostly formatting and wrong module name) to the wiki page.

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I really think this app should be included somehow in the install CD. It would be useful if you wan't to install arch in a box you don't now, and you need to know which modules to load, etc.
Thanks for you're good work.

Thanks lanrat. Your feedback helped me to find a major flaw in the network card search engine. I also reviewed the whole list and fixed what you suggested.

I have uploaded 2.1, which fix all the bugs, added few network modules, and did some editing in the howto page. I also uploaded clearer screenshots.
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html

PS.
Hwd's network search engine is based on kernel 2.4.26 Configure.help file (~/linux-2.4.26/Documentation/Configure.help). 2.6.x doesn't include this file but has split it in small separate files. Any idea what file includes all the network & PCMCIA cards and modules? Or is there a web site?

Re: Hardware detect manager for AL (hwd-4.x)

I'm glad I could help. New hwd looks much better but now there are some strange things (I'm using kernel 2.6.6) :

Alsa       : No Alsa found
  Network    : eth0
Ethernet   : No Ethernet. If you do have check 'Modules detected'
Unknown Ethernet card (/proc/pci):
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029(AS) (rev 0).

I suppose it can't detect alsa because alsa is now built into kernel 2.6.6 ? Alsa is of course working fine with my SB Live. As you can see now hwd can't detect my realtek at all. Some additional info:

lspci
02:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 0a)
02:01.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 0a)
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029(AS)

cat /proc/pci
 Bus 2, device 1, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 10).
      IRQ 5.
      Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=2.Max Lat=20.
      I/O at 0xc000 [0xc01f].
  Bus 2, device 1, function 1:
Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 10).
      Master Capable. Latency=32.
      I/O at 0xc400 [0xc407].
  Bus 2, device 5, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029(AS) (rev 0).
      IRQ 11.
      I/O at 0xc800 [0xc81f].

AFAIK it's quite popular hardware so I hope this will help improve hwd.

I couldn't find any good list of all kernel 2.6.6 network modules. One thing that might be helpful is http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Module-HOWTO/index.html I think it's a bit outdated but still useful especially for newbies. I think it could be good to put this link (or maybe http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Module-HOWTO/individual.html) in the howto man page.

With the Alsa search I am not happy. I am not using Alsa (but OSS) so I cannot do any test to be sure what criteria to search. Did hwd detect the name of your sound card and OSS module?

Currently hwd detects vga card, monitor, mouse and sound card devices built in kernel and as module. But Ethernet and PCMCIA cards for module built only. If I am correct, your Ethernet card "RTL-8029" is configured in kernel. As a module hwd would have detected it as "PCI NE2000 Ethernet" and "driver: ne2k-pci.o".
The net card search is a weak part of hwd. I will have to change the seearch engine based on both kernel and module.
