Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Upgraded (forcing install of xorg-server), rebooted and all was excellent!

Using sis-driver, synaptics touchpad and hotplugging (evdev) for mouse and keyboard on x86_64.

Yay for the devs!

@combuster: doesn't the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tou … enabled.29) help you? I followed the wiki to the letter upon upgrading to kernel .28 and I have not had to change anything this time.

Zl.

I had xorg 1.6 from testing, and works perfect
after today update it's worse
now: xorg-server 1.6.0-3, intel-dri 7.4-2, xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-3

I upgrade groups and then all system becouse all downloaded data had cca 900MB
pacman -Sy
pacman -S xorg
pacman -S firefox
pacman -S gnome
pacman -Su

after reboot glxgears:
[bendo@shami ~]$ glxgears
Chyba segmentácie
Segmentation fault

[bendo@shami ~]$ sudo glxgears
Password:
214 frames in 5.0 seconds = 42.629 FPS
212 frames in 5.0 seconds = 42.218 FPS

wtf ??? why working with sudo ?

Nope, it seems like hal doesnt even touch the fdi file... When I install xf86-input-synaptics i have tapping but no scrolling, when i uninstall it i dont have tapping nor scrolling... Dunno why, but I'm gonna investigate further... ;-)

Mine works, I'm using a modified version of the original fdi. Pasting it here in hopes it helps you. This is saved in "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/11-x11-synaptics.fdi". I remember before having a different location gave funny behaviour.

I've always wondered about that, not all synaptics can do it, can they? Cos my laptop is relatively new (bought it third quarter last year) but the option doesn't seem to do anything.

From my understanding a majority of the recent synaptics touchpads should be able to do this. To test it out, type this in a terminal:

synclient -m 50

Then put two or more fingers on the touchpad and see if the f column registers it. (This column counts how many fingers are on the touchpad). If it registers more than one finger, you should be able to two touch scroll. Let me know if you need more help figuring it out.

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

@wankel

When i edit 11-x11-synaptics.fdi and paste your data, after restarting hal and X i dont have even tapping, scrolling does not work... With synclient values in the f coloumn are in binary range 0 and 1 ;-)

@ngoonee

With your file I dont have scrolling, tapping is there...

Try to revert from UXA to EXA, UXA doesn't behave nicely still, lower performace and some weird quirks...

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Shot in the dark, is /dev/input/event9 actually the input from your touchpad? I recall a HOWTO somewhere that mentions this may not be the case.

Concerning the synclient -m 50, mine only shows f = 1 at max sad

If it only shows f=1, you might still be able to emulate two touch by adding this to xorg or your .fdi file:

Option  "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ"   "120"

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

As always, the openchrome driver crashes and burns on my machine.  Under 1.5, I could not exit X or switch to a VT.  (Workaround was to recompile the driver from SVN.)  Under 1.6, X freezes before switching modes, leaving a blinking text mode cursor in the upper left corner.  I put off updating until 1.6.1, but it did not help.  There are about a dozen different ways of configuring the openchrome driver.  I will try all of them before complaining more :-)

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Finally I did it... Was mad , copied 11-x11-synaptics.fdi from /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor to /etc/hal/fdi/policy and in other terminal man synaptics smile and that was it... Here is the config file that works for me...

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.product" contains="AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint">
        <append key="info.capabilities" type="strlist">input.touchpad</append>
    </match>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.touchpad">
        <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">synaptics</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.SHMConfig" type="string">true</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton1" type="string">1</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton2" type="string">3</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.TapButton3" type="string">2</merge>
        <merge key="input.x11_options.VertEdgeScroll" type="string">true</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.HorizEdgeScroll" type="string">true</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.CornerCoasting" type="string">true</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.RightEdge" type="string">930</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.BottomEdge" type="string">700</merge>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

I'm gonna experiment some more and try to get two finger scrolling etc but for now I'm satisfied with vertical and horizontal scrolling. Thnx 4 all ur help. I saw a hal update this morning, perhaps it pached things up... Me happy now big_smile

Nope, two finger scrolliing doesn't work despite X recognizing VertTwoFingerScroll option... Nevermind, this isn't important to me, I almost never use this option...

You do know that this information can also be found on the hotplugging wiki page, right?

Yes but none of the offered configurations of the fdi file was working for me. I still don't know (because I didnt compared those fdi files with mine) is it because something changed in the meantime or updated hal from git patched things up...  When I wrote it from scratch using man page it worked.

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

I do also find the synaptics difficult. It is far too sensitive and gets triggered by something, so that the cursor flies around by itself. I don't know how to tweak the touchpad to be a bit more steady or how to cool it down a bit.

As for the tapping, it seems not to be completely possible to turn it off. It is a feature I don't care much for. The only thing it is good for is to tap back, when the darned boxes open randomly without any reason.

Any suggestions?

It depends on wether you use hotplugging or not , when you do you have to tweak the hal config file . When you don't use it just configure xorg.conf . just take a look at the wiki

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

It's probably triggered by your finger brushing the touchpad when typing. I remember its possible to turn that off using syndaemon, in fact I just tested it out, still works here. Try adding

syndaemon -i 1.5 -k

to your startup, using whatever way you prefer. There's step-by-step in the wiki at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tou … ile_typing. I would just add the -k so that you can still use mod-keys, for example Ctrl + touchpad scroll for zooming in to webpages doesn't work without it.

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

In case you use KDE 4, I set my sensitivity fairly low there too otherwise I had a similar issue.  If it would help, I'll paste my current xorg.conf parts regarding the touchpad.  However, I don't use the hotplugging, it wouldn't work on my machine here for some reason so I don't know my config would help at all.  If you wish to see it though I'll be happy to post it.

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Funny thing, before the latest hal update there wasnt 11-x11-synaptics.fdi in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor and after the update it showed up... So maybe that was the reason why it didnt even recognized my fdi in /etc/hal... Anyway it is fixed now... And GNOME 2.26.1 popped up in repos now, ql...

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Ok just enabled kms and uxa and here are first impressions:

Enabling kms went without any problems thanks2brain0, made modifications to modprobe.conf and mkinitcpio.conf, rebuild initram and after restart without passing any vga parametars to kernel i've got 1280x800 resolution, switching to x went smoothly without any syncing... UXA enabled, no blocking or freezing...

Pros: It seems that glxgears are showing more consistent results. With exa without kms had 870fps, with exa and kms 550fps, with uxa and kms 580fps. With exa enabled when I move the cursor or doing anything on desktop like moving the glxgears window I got instant performance drop from 870 to 400fps. With uxa enabled fps is 580 no matter what im doing, i move the glxgear and terminal window, moving the cursor and fps stays the same... I like that even though its lower than initial 870 with exa... Running fullscreen 3D apps with compiz enabled didn't show any artefacts, flashes, resizing from fullscreen etc, works flawless. Under exa it did all of the above so I had to switch to metacity before running any 3d fullscreen apps (urban terror etc)...

Cons: Got slow redrawings of windows, on message boxes most often, it shows the white background for a second and then colour the window according to my gtk theme...

All in all I'm pretty sattisfied how it turned out, hope it helps anyone who want to try kms and uxa. Specs are as followes:

Dell Vostro 1310
C2D T5670 @1.8GHz
i965GM with iX3100 gpu
2GB RAM
xserver 1.6.1-1 , xf86-video-intel 2.6.3-3 , intel-dri 7.4-2 , 2.6.29-1 kernel

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

Are you sure that you used exa and kms? I thought using kms pretty much implied using uxa. I'm not 100% sure though.

Re: xorg-server 1.6.0 moves to extra

I tested KMS today too, a few fast VT switches broke X but never mind that... what I noticed was that games like ET when run in some resolution like 640x480 would just take up a square of that size on the screen. Unplayable.

I also upgraded to xf86-video-intel 2.7.0 just now and performance improvement is noticeable (with UXA of course, I've been using it for some time now). However that was after my KMS test and 2.7 is supposed to bring many KMS fixes, in fact users are encouraged to use KMS and UXA now, so maybe I will give KMS another try. Nephrete you are right, KMS enabled implies UXA, otherwise EXA is still the default.
