Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

In the last days I had problems with my computer just going off randomly after some time... As I found out the CPU fan was too loose... Now I somehow fastened it so it seems to work normally now.

Today I noticed (I'm not sure whether it's now the first time or I just didn't see it) that on booting I see just one Arch logo, although I have a Dual Core processor and normally there are 2 logos... I checked whether GRUB has the option nosmp set which was not the case. cat /proc/cpuinfo gave me just one core.. Then I tried to boot the arch live cd (the 2008.06) and cpuinfo had both there!
The BIOS says that there are still 2 as well... so my first idea, that one core is broken because of overheating seems to be wrong, it's impossible that just one core breaks, doesn't it?

So my question is - how do I get my core to be recognized again? I have the new 2.6.29 kernel.. could this be the problem?

My second question is - the information about launching daemons on booting appears AFTER showing the login prompt (I login via tty) [EDIT: This had to do with the OpenNTPD daemon...]

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

I also had this problem with my AMD X2 6000+, with a cold boot only 1 core got detected.
That problem was with kernel 2.6.28, with .29 I never had that problem anymore.

First try to update and if that doesn't work try to add "noapic" to your grub cfg.

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

I have APIC disabled in my bios for ages (when I had ubuntu it said that APIC is broken)...

What do you mean to update? The whole system is up to date.... do you mean to wait for a new kernel release?

Some strange things I found in dmesg output about SMP... maybe something IS im fact broken? oO

SMP: Allowing 1 CPUs, 0 hotplug CPUs
Found and enabled local APIC!
...
CPU: Physical Processor ID: 0
CPU: Processor Core ID: 0
...
SMP alternatives: switching to UP code
...
weird, boot CPU (#0) not listed by the BIOS.
SMP motherboard not detected.
SMP disabled
Brought up 1 CPUs
Total of 1 processors activated (4220.08 BogoMIPS).

Found local APIC? I don't understand this I have disabled it long ago in the BIOS but that seems unimportant..
A dual core is 1 CPU, right? Then that seems ok... But it lists just one core (well nothing new)
Now what I think is really strange is the line with "weird..." and "SMP motherboard not detected, SMP disabled"

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

I forgot to mention that after a reboot the 2nd core got detected.
That problem went away with .29. Can you post your kernel log?

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

dmesg is fine.
Try to enable apic in your bios, it may be fixed by now.

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

I activated my APIC expecting that I get a kernel panic like with ubuntu a year ago... but instead of this... my second core was recognized smile

Can you tell me why this is so? I mean, before it worked fine without APIC... some changes in the kernel? oO

However, thank you! It worked smile

Must be some changed to the kernel.
You can look trough the kernel bugs if you want to find out why.

Re: Dual Core, but just one recognized [SOLVED]

some says this problem is pertaining to kernel type, and I solved it by passing parameter acpi=off via grub to the linux kernel.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4946272

others found kernel parameter pci=nommconf valuable.

it may even be unsolvable.
