xprop seems to have disappeared from my system. This has to be wrong, but from
everything I can tell it's not there.

Not even sure what's going on here, I thought xprop was part of xorg-utils
pkg. But apparently I was wrong.

have you tried reinstalling xorg?, have you upgraded recently?

You must somehow lost it. It still exists here.
bp:~$ whereis xprop
xprop: /usr/bin/xprop /usr/man/man1/xprop.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/xprop.1.gz
Best do reinstall xorg-utils.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

reinstalling xorg-utils did fix it of course. What's odd is that xorg-utils was recorded as installed already. Oh well.
