Chakra install crashed and also start arch or chakra?

Hi,
I love the idea of arch, "OK" with linux but don't mind putting in the work for a great system.

I tried one install of arch on a Dell d830 laptop with the "dreaded" intel integrated video GM965. I spent quite a while trying to get KDEMOD going, but never could get the xserver working. I almost made it as my keyboard mouse finally kicked in, but it was just not working right.

I then found out about chakra and downloaded that yesterday. I love the idea of starting out with just arch and kdemod since it gives me a little more ease of installation and having X going so I can "work" during the day while I learn this new system.

What should I setup for partitions in chakra/arch? I have an 80gb drive and plan to use the whole thing and then use virtual systems for everything else i might need.

I initially tried to setup the following in chakra.

1. 32mb partition for /boot
2. 1024 for swap
3 10240 for /
4 6xxx "the rest" for /home

Is that a good way to partition it and now when I try to use the live cd I can't delete the partitions or get it to install?

Welcome to the forums .

What's wrong with using the Arch installer if you're 'ok' with Linux, if you don't mind me asking? Why a separate boot, if you do not really need it (I'm not saying you don't - all I am saying is you do not say whether it's really necessary or not)?

The point of Arch is starting with the bare minimum and work your way up from there. Using Chakra - with all due respect - is the same as installing whatever major distro there is out there, then removing everything you don't need afterwards.

I am going to install Arch first as I realize that is a key component to the whole system.

I was only partitioning it like that as I thought it had to be separate. When I tried to install Arch previously I noticed that if you follow the standard items that it had done that 32 mib partition.

What are your recommendations?

No /boot unless you really need it. Separate /home like you said in your other thread. 10 GB for / should be plenty. Good luck with it .

Point of Arch is rolling updates, pacman and so on.

Point of Chakra is autoconfiguring, live cd and faster way to install arch. (eventually)
And yes Arch installer is better for beginners, chakra needs more competent testers in alpha stage

faster way to install? How will/do they do that? or did you mean the configuration after the install?

Oh yes, yes I did. Would be pretty hard to make the base install faster indeed.

Well theoretically it could be improved. eg selecting packages first, then downloading them while performing other steps (setting clock, formatting disks etc) so they can immediately installed in the install packages phase, only doing mkinitcpio once (now it happens during package installation + after configure system), etc. But stuff like that would things much more complicated, so right now I prefer a "quite fast" installer whose code can still be understood Anyway this is for the Arch installer, I don't know how the Chakra guys do it. Probably similar but with a fancier interface.
