Multimedia woes!

I'm having problems with any multimedia software (kaffeine, xine, mplayer, k3b) reading from either of my cd drives.  Kaffeine complains about a "kpart" not loading, xine and mplayer just lock up when I try to read a cd/dvd, and k3b doesn't even think they exist!  I can mount both drives just fine and look at their contents in konqueror, but trying to play any VIDEO off them just doesn't work.  Music files work fine so long as I play them in amarok, anything else and they play but there's no sound.  This is the first distro I've ever had these problems with (and I've used several).

IOMEGA SUPERDVD/BURNER
HP COMBI CD-WRITER/DVD READER
INTEL GRAPHICS CHIP I810 (DRIVER)
KERNEL 2.6.9

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Daniel

Re: Multimedia woes!

playing cd
--------------

- what about xmms (either with or without xmms-cdparanoia)?

- can you play cd audio with cdcd?

about dvd
--------------

- make sure, you have libdvdcss installed

- do you have your user added to the groups audio and optical? (udev default permissions use these groups)

The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

Re: Multimedia woes!

Well, I don't have xmms installed (as I prefer amarok).  But no, I can't play an audio cd with any program.  I can only play audio files off the hd.

I do have all the necessary "dvd" stuff installed.

I'm using devfs and not udev.  It almost has to be something to do with my group permissions, but I don't how to fix it.  I've tried all these things as root, as well.

Thanks,

Daniel

Re: Multimedia woes!

And did it work as root?

If not, it's probably not a permission problem.

Re: Multimedia woes!

No it didn't work as root, and that's what finally helped me figure it out.  The groups "audio and optical" never got added to the group list.  I added them, added users to the groups and voila!

That was starting to get really annoying!

Thanks for the help,

Daniel

Re: Multimedia woes!

Now it only works so long as I have arts disabled in KDE.  How do I get alsa and arts to work together?
