Re: Ext4 barriers -- pros and cons?

Of course. It is not much help when after crash someone tells you that some magic option may have prevented it. BTW it is not exactly ext4 bug, but many applications are used on older behaviour as is in ext2/ext3. Anyway kernel 2.6.30 will have some workaround.

Re: Ext4 barriers -- pros and cons?

Yes... :-)
I changed my /var and /home to reiserfs again (hmm missing the speed of ext4), but I don't want to risk data loss on my /home partition.
/ and /mnt/data (media device) are still ext4 because they are so big that I'm too lazy to backup it now... :-)

Re: Ext4 barriers -- pros and cons?

I'm using ext4 for a couple of months and didn't have problems. However, I mount it with barrier=0,nodelalloc, which basically turns it into ext3, but I still enjoy the fast fsck times and it has also other small improvements.

Re: Ext4 barriers -- pros and cons?

I'm another who has been using ext4 for several months but has now put nodelalloc in fstab for my two ext4 partitions. I've had 3-4 scary episodes but no massive data loss. Still, after reading reports of serious problems, I decided to play it safe.

FWIW, I haven't noticed any serious performance hit since adding nodelalloc to fstab. It's true that I haven't done any particularly disk-intensive stuff since then, though. For my ordinary desktop use, I'm not feeling any slowdown, and it's reassuring to know that my data is safer.

I'll probably remove nodealloc when kernel 2.6.30 comes out, assuming that what Ranguvar said here is true.
