how do i apply changes to the system configuration ?

i just instaled archlinux but i don't know how to apply changes to the system so i have to reboot ( very lame i know ...)

1 - after i change my gateway how do i apply the change ?
2 - installed xfce4 and then copied xinitrc from /opt/xfce4..../xinitrc to /etc/X11/xinitr/xinitrc
but when i tried to startx xfce the path to the xfce4 bins wasn't recognized so it faild to start
rebooted and then everything was fine. how did arch add the path ? how can i do it by myself so i don't have to reboot ?

Re: how do i apply changes to the system configuration ?

1. rc.conf is were the gateway info is stored.
2. mv xinitrc to /home/user/.xinitrc this way for that user you will have the neccessary startup for Xorg

The path is updated by the script /etc/profile.d/xfce4.sh
After installing xfce4, you just need to logout and then to login to take it into account.

BTW, about your gateway, you just need to restart the network to apply the change.

problem of not, that is not the way to configure your system.  Your xinitrc should be user based....
