Sorry if this has already been posted (had a look but couldn't find anything)
What are peoples opinions on Gnome 3.0/Gnome Shell?
For those of you that haven't seen it:
Gnome Three Point Zero Plan
Gnome Shell
Gnome Shell Screencasts
I installed it to have a look and really don't like it, theres still just under a year until its released so could all change by then though.
Don't think I'll be switching back from KDE anytime soon though

U didn t liked it???? I say these videos blows kde 4.X out to the moon !!! hail to gnome 3 !!!!!!!!!

I don't like neither. Much effort with small gain in useability.
I want a well structured approach which lets me handle my everyday problems fast and easily. These examples are awkward and rather useless to me compared to what is readily available. A playground to impress people but nothing to accomplish an everyday workload.
If you are fond of compiz these efforts might readily appeal. But it is not my KISS way of using a computer as a (convenient) tool.
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

It's no final concept, I believe their just experimenting.

I think I'll like it.
The UI-overhaul makes the use of several panels obsolete and why should you always have several virtual desktops loaded if you're only using one?
My only concern is that it'll be harder for non-gnome (read: windows-)users to make the switch. Up until now it was very easy to get people to try it out, because the usage was not all that different for those only browsing and emailing.
Compiz is fun to use, but it doesn't add very much to the usage of the desktop. I think gnome has grabbed the right components from the compiz-project for the sake of usability.
KDE4 is really a piece of art, but it is completely unusable on my 3000+-laptop with 512MB RAM. What people gain in speed from switching to linux, they lose again with KDE4

I agree that Gnome 3.0 looks awesome! I think KDE4 is beautiful -- and I even left know for 3-4 weeks trying it out. But I just ended up back in Gnome. I like what 3.0 is shaping up to be. I also like eye-candy options if I want. I just gotta have my shadows and such. I even like the wobbly windows. And the desktop cube from compiz is cool! I really like transparency options on things, too. But that's about it. I don't use the fire and water effects, etc.

Efficiency > Eye candy
And Gnome 3.0 isn't efficiency ATM, I'll like to see what will the next versions look like.

I see kde4 all over again.. in gnome.. I'll stick with openbox

It's the first i saw the videos...
1. wtf? they must be joking...
2. I'm never gonna use this...
3. I don't see any way of using it in reality -> just an eyecandy -> bloat
PS.: I'm not against eyecandy, but this is too much

Is sad, I have always been a GNOME user, and now I am on KDE4 because here is where progress is being made. That looks like same GNOME 2.something, just adding a different style of menu usage, with the gnome-shell, but pretty much everything stays the same.

That's it...if this must be used, it would be time for me to find a new DE (probably XFCE or an *box).

DEs are way too bloated. Just live with WMs and good panels.

No Compiz on WM's

I like the idea of a separate window management/application launching mode, so the screen can be freed from that stuff during normal operation.
Problem is, this is integrated at the WM level so you probably can't use it with an actually good WM.
What does not kill you will hurt a lot.

compiz IS a WM. I've used it standalone.

It's an interesting concept, but I don't see it being more efficient than the more traditional good-window-manager and desktop-menu combination.
Compiz and KDE 4 is fine for me when I'm on a system that can handle the resource use. Otherwise, I stick with Fluxbox or something light and XFCE if I absolutely need a desktop environment.

Such as? I know it is beautiful, but where's the progress?
In my opinion Gnome is making much more progress by structurally integrating many functions and programs (f.e. the telepathy-framework). I know It's not really KISS and certainly not 'one app, one function', but whoever uses a DE is not really that interested in those principles and values the profits of a DE above a WM.
The answer of gnome 2.0 to unclutter the panel was to make a second panel available, and thus wasting screen-estate. Gnome 3.0 will offer another solution, probably making it even possible to hide all panels if wanted. I myself only rarely use the app-menu - I have shortcuts for those programs I use every day and with gnome 3.0 I could use my whole screen for the app I'm working in.
Where this might only look as if it's a visual change, I'm convinced this is a usability-change.
IMHO gnome suffers from the fact that they have a solid product that is improving more under the hood than above it.

The reason I like gnome is that it isn't cluttered. Just plain and simple but with all the functionality you can expect from a desktop environment. I hate all those graphical flashy things like compiz (and KDE4 comes way too close).

my opinion: kde is very nice, you got many options to choose - desktop effects or not, plasmoids or not.

I guess I'm missing the point here. It seems like this new version of gnome will be very innovative, but innovation does not always equal improvment. The menu looks like it can only display a few apps at a time unless you give up your desktop because the icons are so huge. The ability to dynamically change the number of workspaces you have open is kinda neat, but in the end even a 486 can run 4 workspaces without chugging, and a system that would be able to run gnome3 would probably have a bit more muscle under the hood than that.
In the end, I guess all I have to say is "Looks neat, but kinda pointless." Until they come up with a way to use the overlays in a way more efficient for screen space, it just seemed needlessly complicated.
Offline
That's just it with all these new interface "innovations". It all only looks neat and doesn't improve usability.
I'm actually thinking that there really isn't much to improve, or it's hard for everyone to break from the current interface mentality.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

I hope Gnome does do something radically awesome with 3.0, even though I'm a hardKore KDE fan -- KDE fits my personality, but Gnome is definitely important in the Linux/Unix world (some people prefer simplicity). KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, and all other windowed environments have a lot to gain from and contribute to each other; when one DE/WM does something cool, the others ought to be able to say, "Hey, that's pretty much awesome!" and incorporate the technology into their own software without worrying about kindling flames. As a diverse community, we need to understand the False Consensus Effect, and realize just because someone has an opinion different from ours, it may not necessarily be incorrect.
Should any one DE or WM take over the Linux world, well, given all the different able-bodied personalities out there, that will never happen so we don't have anything to worry about

yes, I guess that is great.
I've been using through the time gnome(ubuntu),fluxbox,e17, and now kde4 (since it's release - in arch).
I'm sure gnome is very popular in ubuntu/debian distributions, and that will make the new gnome rock on many machines..
