arch64, RAM: 5gb of 6gb usable

Hello there,

i recently upgraded my hardware, adding 2x2GB Ram Sticks.
Its a workstation (no laptop),

The bios says that 6GB are Usable of 6GB Installed. (Before flashing it, it said only 5GB Usable).

In Archlinux, i have only 5GB available

 free -m
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:          4953        848       4105          0          0        259
-/+ buffers/cache:        588       4365
Swap:            0          0          0

in dmesg, the following line says that linux at least knows how much mem there is:

Memory: 5070532k/6291456k available (2464k kernel code, 170136k reserved, 926k data, 276k init)

here the full dmesg log:

Re: arch64, RAM: 5gb of 6gb usable

I assume that you're using arch64? Have you tried running memtest86?

Re: arch64, RAM: 5gb of 6gb usable

Yeah, something's funky with your RAM. If you look close, that dmesg line shows Linux knows there's 6GiB of RAM, but only 5GiB is available. My quick guess? One side of one of your sticks is bad. Swap in and out modules to find out which. Also, *maybe* one of the RAM slots could be bad, check that too. Memtest86+ is a fine idea.

@SamC
yes, arch64.

@Ranguvar:
they are both single sided

but i will run the memtest this evening

Re: arch64, RAM: 5gb of 6gb usable

I didn't even know they sold single-sided modules. Hm. Then maybe some chips are bad? Again, also try moving them around - a slot could be bad.

Its just a guess but how many memory slots does your motherboard have and what is the recommended way to populate those slots?
You seem to have an "older" Athlon 64 cpu (I have a machine with one too) and the manufacturer says to preferably populate 2 or 4 slots (for dual channel anyway). Also what is the maximum memory density the manufacturer of your board says your's support?

Re: arch64, RAM: 5gb of 6gb usable

My board has 4 slots, the slots are populated so that 2 identical ram sticks build a dual channel. The board supports max 8GB with 2GB per slot.

I've run memtest86+  and it failed at test 8, 6 times at adresses >5500MB. I've rerun test 8 at those adress ranges but couldn't reproduce the errors.
If i probe the bios for the mem sizes (within memtest) i also get a lot of errors, but i am not sure if these errors happen because of ram failure or wrong use of memtest

i guess some chips of the 2GB stick are broken

Make sure to try a different stick in that slot - if your problem moves in range to where the stick is now, the stick is bad, but if it stays in that range, the slot is bad.

Then 6GB = 3 used slots, like I said check if that is a recommended / supported configuration. Does the board still try to use a dual channel configuration? If it does then try setting the bios to single channel.

Just for your information: A planed to find out what chip it was at a later time. After a few weeks I checked my ram in htop to see my ram usage an noticed that now it says i have a total of 6GiB of Ram. The problem just disappeared.
