[SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

I've just tried to change my default printer using localhost:631 on firefox 3.0.9 and guess what? I am not allowed. Firefox is so secure now that I get this: tMWtndQwtf?

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

tMWtneg

I get that authentication screen with 3.0.9, but nothing else. i haven't tried changing my default printer (only have one), but I did try to (un)publish it which requires administration permissions (root in this case).

It looks to me like Firefox is being overly 'careful' again... Starts to feel like Vista. There should really be an are.you.a.mentally.challenged.user in about:config that you can change, so you can get rid of it ::)

Am I wrong or is it not specifying on which port you're trying to connect? I see 80 in the 'explanation', but that is part of the explanation I guess, and thus a static number.

Hi, i think this happen because the ipv6 and the new cups....

Disable the ipv6 module http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IPv … the_Module , and then reboot, this works for me wink

Edit: link solved... Thanks toad

Please delete the comma from the link and it will work wink And thanks, I'll try it.

@ quarkup
I have tried with opera but it so happens that I am missing a cartridge for the printer and it tells me kindly that I can stuff it 'cos the printer is not online. So that is a thumbs up I suppose.

Bingo, aqamar, that did it smile I don't know what opera was on about but since I hardly ever use it I don't really care. Will mark as solved.

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

Hang on, that doesn't _really_ solve it now, does it. It simply disables IPv6. But why does Gran Paradiso/Firefox does it in the first place? And how comes quarkup's AUR build apparently ignores this?

Bizarre.

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

I was having the same problems.  In my case, the problem wasn't with the browsers, it was with cups 1.3.10-1 which came out about 5 days ago.  They have made changes in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf that have caused problems.  I fixed the problems by the following:

as root, or use sudo

# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.bkup
# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

The first line makes a backup of your cupsd.conf file so you can go back to it if necessary.  The second line puts cupsd.conf back to it's default state.  It fixed everything for me.  YMMV.

Edit:  opps, forgot.  You need to restart cups for the changes to take effect.

# /etc/rc.d/cups restart

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

Cheers. So what had you done to your cupdsd.conf to make it go haywire? I was trying to change the pristine version to add an allowed user - no problem manually - but it simply wouldn't work on localhost until the ipv6 module was disabled ???

Will try your solutions as well though out of interest. Seems weird though.

The only time that I've ever see the message in the OP is when cupsd isn't running. After starting it the message went away.

I very much doubt you've seen THAT message without cupds running, skottish. Try it.

Admittedly it didn't work by stopping the daemon on this machine. But, I have for a fact seen that exact message on another machine which was fixed by starting CUPS. It took hours for me to realize a solution.

Who hasn't been through it, skottish smile There is always the off-chance of learning with each mistake or wasted hour wink

I am just totally amazed that pudge's solution worked on a virtually (perhaps 10 days old) new install on which cupsd.conf hadn't been touched. I hate these "how did that happen" experiences - they remind me of that other OS - and this was definitely one of them for me...

There's an interesting point in this. I've actually had this message twice, both times on new installs, and both times solved the same way.

Here is my theory on what is happening.

You said that your install was 10 days old at the time of the problem developing.  That means that it probably had cups-1.3.9 when first installed.  On 18-Apr-09 or there abouts, cups-1.3.10 was put in the extra repository.  When you updated firefox, cups was also updated.  This is probably when the problems started for you, eh?

You said cupsd.conf hadn't been touched by you.  Who's to say that cups-1.3.9 itself didn't make changes to cupsd.conf?  If so, then something cups-1.3.9 did to cupsd.conf was not compatible with cups-1.3.10.  By going back to defaults, the cups-1.3.9 changes were eliminated and cups-1.3.10 was free to make the changes it needed in order to work on your system.  Voila, cups-1.3.10 is now happy.

Just a theory.

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

Hm, fair point! How do I find out when I installed? Can't think of anything but:

toad@deskarch 998\5 /var/log > head messages.log
Apr 18 23:56:12 deskarch BIOS EBDA/lowmem at: 00099800/00099800
Apr 18 23:56:12 deskarch Linux version 2.6.28-ARCH (root@T-POWA-LX) (gcc version 4.3.3 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Feb 8 09:47:26 UTC 2009
etc...

This supports your theory:

toad@deskarch 997\4 /var/log > cat pacman.log |grep cups
[2009-04-19 01:36] installed libcups (1.3.10-1)
[2009-04-19 01:36] installed cups (1.3.10-1)
[2009-04-19 01:36] installed pycups (1.9.45-1)
[2009-04-23 18:12] installed libgnomecups (0.2.3-4)
[2009-04-23 18:16] removed libgnomecups (0.2.3-4)

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

go to /var/cache/pacman/pkg  then do

# ls -l cups*

I'm guessing that cups-1.3.9 and cups-1.3.10 will both be listed, unless you have cleaned out the package cache.

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

Cheers mate. I haven't done anything to the cache yet 'cos I've still got plenty of space. Normally it gets tight after about 3 to 4 months, not after a week or two wink

toad@deskarch 997\6 /var/cache/pacman/pkg > ls -l cups*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3176508 2009-04-19 01:13 cups-1.3.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

And checking my posts on this forum I did indeed reinstall in the night 18th to 19th so "head messages.log" reflects the first signs of life of this install.

Re: [SOLVED] - localhost:631 and firefox 3.0.9

Solution for me:

1) edit the /etc/modprobe.conf as the wiki says ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IPv … the_Module )

2) do this

# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.backup
# cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

3) restart the cups daemon
sudo /etc/rc.d/cups restart

4) restart the browser
