UPDATE:
Does not happen anymore
Things to note:
xf86-video-intel on this GPU (gma 950; i945 chip) is unusable (compositing too slow)
regardless of driver 2d rendering is slow - nothing to do about it
using hotplugging entirely - no xorg.conf
glxgears says:
Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.
1850 frames in 5.0 seconds = 369.950 FPS
I used to get as much as 1500 FPS, and that's like 4 times the current rate!
Issue:
I'm using KDE and kwin composite, but surprisingly games run fine even with the compositing on (i turn it off to gain a slight fps increase though). However, blender totally goes haywire. As such, I disable compositing with alt+shift+f12 hoping that it'll work fine. The sad truth is, even with the compositing disabled the program remains to be unusable.
No button icons, trailing artefacts, it's just a mess. The intel workaround options in xorg.conf don't make any difference (migrationheuristics and such).

I do have the same problem with blender....intel 965GM here....
howerver, using "NoAccel" in xorg.conf let me use the app, but then everything becomes sluggish... but blender plays nice... never tried to open heavy .blends actually....
using intel 2.7 from testing and notiling option in xorg.conf....

I also have the same problems using xf86-video-intel with i945 graphics device. Using "noaccel" works fine for me, but it is not a sufficient solution..

Blender doesn't like being in a composite desktop, even on the 2.6x intel drivers which enable DRI2. Much like Maple / Mathlab.

edit: need to disable compositing in xorg.conf
pressing a shortcut doesn't disable it - just stops the compositing process.
