Hey all. Yes, we have a previous thread, but the initial post didn't give a good overview on where we are, and it's been used mostly for internal discussion.
Anyways, we've been working on porting pacman to OS X, and we've finally gotten our binary hosting. We're working on uploading our current packages, and would love input as to what new packages people would like added, which can be done on our website. And, of course, we always appreciate the help if anyone is able to help maintain packages. Anyone interested should check it out sometime

Wow, great effort guys. Looks like it will be quite useful to Mac owners.

I have some friends that will absolutely love this. Amazing.

Would this work with Darwin? I'm more interested in that than with OS X itself.

If you have OSX chances are you run darwin..I didn't know there are any alternatives...

Darwin is what OS X is based on and there is an open source project called PureDarwin based on it.

I wish I had this when I was using Macs, but thankfully that time is passed. Nice project though.

301 redirect to http://twilightlair.net:3000/projects/arch-osx !?
Too bad. I wanted to check it out.
FYI: Nonstandard http ports for a public project are generally..a bad idea. For example, nobody on the networks I manage at work would be able to get to that site either.

Can you guys please have a look at this:

You could use a reverse proxy setup for arch-osx.twilightlair.net so that users only see arch-osx.twilightlair.net and not the redmine instance on twilightlair.net:3000
Also, Port 80 is open in almost all firewalls, so chances that users can't get to your site are reduced.

Mmm, I wish I'd had this (MacPorts doesn't even come close to pacman). Great work!

This looks great, fink and macports are driving me nuts. Is the project still active, as the latest activity on the site seems 100 days ago...

well, we're here, but we don't have many active devs for adding / maintaining packages

If I understand correctly, this is not "arch on OSX". it's porting pacman to OSX and providing packages for OSX. Pacman is a package manager that is not neccesarily coupled to Arch.

I think this is a great effort and I am willing to contribute in package maintenance if I would know more about the project. I think if this project would work, this is a project with a very high potential, as fink is a big mess and macports is imho nice, but not straightforward for most linux users and the lack of binary packages is very annoying.
Can somebody update me a bit more about the status?

If i understand you correct, then you can update OS X to the latest packages for example X? And if that works then can i install for exempel irssi in my mac with pacman?

Currently, we have all the pacman tools, and quite a few packages built for mac. You can find the PKGBUILDs at http://github.com/tom5760/arch-osx Most of these packages have binaries built for them too.
If you wish to add/update packages, you can just fork my Github repo, and submit a pull request with your updates.

I would be willing to create packages. Do you think it would be a good idea to follow arch's structure of core, extra and community and remove those packages which are not relevant for osx or conflict with the system?

Great!

I don't think we need to do that. We don't have a huge number of packages, and
the meaning of the three repos wouldn't make much sense for us.
If you want though, you can post messages to our mailing list at

Alright Tom, I have subscribed to the mailing list. There we can discuss further!

Hi all,
The original website http://arch-osx.twilightlair.net gives me an Internal Error. What might be the problem?
Best regards,
Jan,
hoping to get a reasonable package management on OSX
