Typical kernel compilation time

I'm very happy with arch, but decided to try out lunarlinux, a source based distro. I started setting it up in a virtual machine, and decided to compile my own kernel.

My machine is has a pentium 4, and its been compiling for about three hours. Is this typical? I've never compiled my own kernel. I didn't enable many more features than default when using the kernel configuration tool (I think it was makeconfig)

Mine takes only a few minutes (like 7 or 8) on a Core 2 Duo, and I don't remember it being much longer on my old P4s.  You must have just about every option turned on for it to take so long...  The easiest place to trim excess fat is in the device drivers section.  You can easily eliminate the drivers for all the NICs, sound cards, etc that you do not own.

Re: Typical kernel compilation time

I had about 3 to maximum 10 minutes on varying machines. So something is definitely going wrong at yours.

Re: Typical kernel compilation time

Well, standart Arch kernel with my own modifications + reiser4 + tuxonice + some patches takes about 15-20 mins on Mobile C2D 2.2GHz. On Quad Phenom 9950 Black Edition it was 10-15 mins if I remember correctly...
3 hrs on P4 might be typical (depending on speed), a friend of mine once told me he had to wait 4 hrs to complete kernel compilation on 1.1 GHz Athlon...

But still, by saying "on my old P4" is kinda saying nothing really helpful as P4's were from 1.3 GHz to 3.8 GHz if I remember correctly and they are all old wink

Re: Typical kernel compilation time

My C2D 2.66 (most of the time): about 15 minutes for a big kernel (allyesconfig, choose processor family, let it go). <5 minutes for a kernel without extraneous hardware support (no ISA sound, no internal networking other than what I have, etc.).

It would typically take 30-45 minutes on my old AthlonXP ~2GHz (always OCed to somewhere around there), with SMGL.

While four hours seems like a bit much, maybe kernels were bigger back then. Then, not only could a P4 be from 1.2 (I've seen them retail that low) to 3.8, but SDR RAM P4s were almost as bad as original (no L2) Celerons, and would be common from 1.2 to 2.4GHz when it came to big vendor PCs. I could easily believe about 4 hours from one of those setups (You would not want to give up a 1GHz PIII for a 2.4GHz P4 w/ PC133! Some big vendor boxes were just sad, back then). I have a feeling that if that 4 hours on the Athlon 1.1 is correct, that GCC was RAM-limited, or there was some other serious issue with his setup.

My PIII 1.13 (notebook) takes less than two hours, but more than 1, for .29.1 (I haven't specifically timed it).

Re: Typical kernel compilation time

Well guys, good job on the compilation times but on mine C2D 1.8GHz, 2.6.29-1 kernel from kernel.org compiled for about one hour. Yes it was somewhat bloated, I've did it while I was listening music and downloading from internet so if I have done it in CLI without X it should be a lot faster...Anyways 3h is a lot for a Pentium4D but not 2much for Sempron 1.7GHz which is also listed under P4...

A Sempron is an AMD processor though. Which he most likely would not refer to as a P4.

Re: Typical kernel compilation time

The lowest processor I had running Arch, was an Intel PentiumII @ 300MHz. It took about an hour (leave or take) for a custom kernel to compile.

Well Athlon XP and all up to Barton were AMD's processors that were alternatives to Intel P4's so I've heard a lot of times ppl stating that they have P4 if they owned some of these processors... I've compiled my first kernel on AMD K6II 300MHz o/c @ 400 MHz and compiling took about an hour and a half... Kernel got a lot bigger during last 10 years so I'm not supprised a lot that it takes an hour on C2D Mobile... I'm sure it can be done for 15-20 minutes if it's stripped to the bone just for your own needs...

If you are compiling it inside a virtual machine then it sounds alright.
