[solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

EDIT: Just to report that with 2.6.30-5 it works again. Never figured out WTF was wrong with 2.6.29 series, though.

Original post follows:

With last update to 2.6.29.1 my wireless card loses link with the AP almost the moment it connects, with the following message:

wlan0: No ProbeResp from current AP (AP_MAC) - assume out of range

Sometimes the connection lasts for a minute or so, but although some packets are sent, none is received. Transfer rate is stated as 1Mb/s,  which is strange because normally is between 24-54. Just in case I tried with three APs of different brands and models with the same results.

Rolling back to kernel26-2.6.28.8-1 and kernel26-firmware-2.6.28-1 solves the issue. My card as reported by lspci is:

10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

Any hints to have network with the last kernel?

I don't really have any ideas for you to try but I can report that I'm using the new 2.6.29.1-3 kernel and have the exact same wireless card according to lspci and I have no wireless problems.  So you might want to look somewhere else.  My AP is a Linksys WRT150N if that helps.

Thanks all for the input. For what I can read in the forum there seems to be issues with 2.6.29.1 and some wireless setups. I'll stick with 2.6.28.8 which works flawlessly for me, let's see if there's better luck with next kernel release.

Confirmed here (on HP530 laptop), except that I couldn't even boot up the system. It keeps reporting some microcode issue ("... microcode: -2" or something like that)... I have disabled the wlan and DualCPU support (both in BIOS) and managed to boot the system w/o errors.

Which is "the crda hint"? I had crda installed prior to the update and didn't help. Kernels older than 2.6.29 work with and without crda, 2.6.29 doesn't (for me).

Anyway, AFAIK the most important difference between the US default and my contry (ES) is that there are two more channels available for 802.11g. I set crda up just in case I happend to come across a network which used one of them, but I've found none yet. I guess that most APs come with US defaults, so those two extra channels are not widely used.

I'm also having the same problem with my intel wi-fi. Can someone please explain how do I roll-back to kernel 2.6.28?

There's a wiki page for downgrading packages.

It's funny but i also have i3945 and 2.6.29-1 kernel and no problems here:

I had same problems with ubuntu (in both stock 2.6.28 and my custom 2.6.29) but in arch everything is ok...

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

I have almost the same hardware, except my CPU is T5470 @ 1.60GHz which shouldn't make a difference in this regard.

The most noteworthy difference is that I use i686 (I even didn't know my CPU was x86_64 capable till last April Fools, thought it was an AMD architecture). I'm too lazy to migrate just to check, but perhaps the other users can state their architecture so we can see if there is a pattern here.

It should also be noted that the module version is the same in 2.6.28 and 2.6.29 (1.2.26ks) which makes this case even more strange.

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/d … 28.2.8.tgz

Try with this firmware... Copy it in /lib/firmware, backup the old ones just in case, iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode should be the name of the firmware, in archive it's iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode, rename it first to iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode and copy it in /lib/firmware replacing the old one and restart... As far as I can tell from dmesg there is an error while loading firmware...

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

It's very strange, I had problems on older kernels if channel of the AP is greater than 10, it wouldn't connect, it scans and recognizes the wireless network but can't connect to it... So if u have a wireless provider u can't change this (they have to manually set the wireless channel <10) but if u have wireless router and u r connecting with it @home u can reconfigure your router to a channel smaller than 10...

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

Thanks for the suggestion. With the last 2.6.29.1-4 release I've been playing a bit with some networks, changing crda domains, messing with the /lib/firmware files and what not to no avail: always 1Mb connection reported, but zero packets received. It doesn't matter if the channel is 4, 10 or 11.

Running out of ideas with this one...

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

Could you try another live distro from cd/dvd just to see if the problem is arch specific, it could narrow the problem...

Can you ping your ap?

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

Having a look at Distrowatch I only found Sabayon with an ISO with the latest kernel (other distros had older kernels which there is no point in testing as they work fine in Arch, or I was unable to figure out the kernel version from the release notes). I guess it could serve but it's almost 2GB and I'd rather spare the download if possible (just need a command line to test the network). Do you know of other suitable candidates?

About the ping, no, it stalls for a bit then dumps a network unreachable error. But as I said earlier no packets are received ("RX packets" is always 0 in ifconfig) so I'd guess that the problem is before the TCP/IP layer.

Re: [solved] Kernel26(-firmware)-2.6.29.1-3 and iwl3945

I ran out of ideas too. I've noticed that there was a kernel upgrade 2.6.29-4 and a wireless-regdb 2009.04.17-1 update so if u updated arch recently and still having problems I don't know what else u could try to fix the problem. Regardless of firmware is loading correctly u could try to replace it from the one @ intellinuxwireless... Could be a bug within firmware itself...
