KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

Fairly new to Arch, just got KDM loading on boot.

Only issue is that KDE crashes as soon as I attempt to log in (enter username/password).

My screen flashes black, then shows a "loading" watch, and the main kdm screen pops back up.

This is on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y2.

Here's my /var/log/kdm.log

A fair amount of googling for

(EE) XKB: No components provided for device Virtual core keyboard

has been fruitless, and I am left wondering if anyone has any ideas?

Thanks...

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

What is your space situation? Also, you on KDEmod or vanilla KDE? Is there anything helpful in messages.log or Xorg.log? Christ, I've had exactly the same problem but cannot remember how I sorted it... There is also ye olde sledge hammer method of deleting/moving your ~/.kde4 and ~/.kde folders.

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

This is on a fresh install, and KDE was installed using the instructions here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE

I have no ~/.kde4 or ~/.kde

messages.log has no hints...

df -h says I have 21 gb free

Xorg.log gives no helpful hints, but here it is:

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

I have no ~/.kde4 or ~/.kde

So KDE has not even kicked in. Try starting it from the CLI (check your ~/.xinitrc) and see whether it starts.

Could you also post the daemon stanza of your rc.conf - in case you haven't rebooted, did you start all the daemons manually?

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

Well running sudo startx -- :1 starts kde4 on vc9 ... so that works.

My ~/.xinitrc

exec startkde

As for the daemons portion of /etc/rc.conf

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

Interesting, running startx -- :1 as my user gives:

(EE) [drm] Could not set DRM device bus ID.
(EE) intel(0): [dri] DRISreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .

Re: KDE Crashes immediately from KDM

You can't have followed the wiki all that closely - where is hal for example wink

Also, any particular reason why you started kde as root? I don't think I'd dare...

From the Wiki:

Add hal to DAEMONS array of /etc/rc.conf:

Start hal:
# /etc/rc.d/hal start

Yeah, I must have glossed over that one line.
