Is the VLC player in the repo working? When I install it, the interface looks different than what I am used to and none of the buttons work (open does not bring up a window to open a file). I am thinking it might have to do with the fact I am using kdemods (kde 4.2)

Works fine here on kdemod 4 (stable).

Works fine here (version 0.9.9a) on kdemod, too. You are aware that vlc uses Qt now?

I have QTmods installed... I had QT (regular) when I noticed I could not open anything. I installed QTmod and I see the same thing.
When I hover over buttons, they "highlight" but nothing happens when I click them (open/play/etc). Odd. I built one from AUR and it works, but it is pretty much like the previous version. I would like to stick with the repo version:-)

If compiling it worked fine and the binary doesn't, it sounds like you have a library problem; something too new or too old for binary vlc.
Do you use the testing repo?
Does running it from the console and trying to click the buttons show anything interesting?
(BTW binary vlc also works fine for me on KDEMod Unstable + testing repo, currently at 4.2.70-3)

Funny, I removed the AUR package I made and reinstalled the one from the repo, and it looked like the VLC I was used to, and it worked. I do remember I had to install another dependency to make the package and it upgraded kdemod-kdelibs, so there you have it.
I would have done an pacman -Syu but I use Arch as a live distro (chakra-project.org), so I want to keep my overlay minimal.
Somewhat related: I really like vlc more than the other media players, but for some reason it is really choppy compared to mplayer. I have the same video output selected for both and the same cache size set. I have also tried the other video methods. open-gl does not have choppiness, but black rectangles flash around the screen, so that is equally annoying.
I have an IBM thinkpad with whatever integrated intel card (915GM) And I have 1.5GB ram.
I have a similar machine with the 945GMA and it works fine.

Not that I can really help you, being an nvidia user, but...
Are you using xf86-video-intel or xf86-video-intel-legacy? From what I understand, people are having problems with one or the other. Perhaps change that and see if it helps?
