Gnome will not load from xdm. It starts, then stops, leaving it partially
loaded. The splash screen flashes and that's the end of it. Gnome
will load from gdm and kdm.
Here is what does get loaded:
/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session
/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon
/opt/gnome/libexec/bonobo-activatio
/opt/gnome/libexec/gnome-settings-d
xscreensaver -nosplash
Any suggestions?

If you're currently starting xdm from /etc/inittab, you could try starting it with /etc/rc.d/xdm instead. This way /etc/profile will be sourced before xdm is run, which is a good idea. Or you could do like me and source /etc/profile on the first line of ~/.xinitrc (IIRC xdm uses .xsession, I always have .xsession as a symlink to .xinitrc). I'm currently using Login.app btw.

Hi,
I just thought I would let everyone know that the problem
was solved by sourcing /etc/profile in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.
What was happening is that Gnome would begin to load,
try to find metacity, and just sit there when it could not.
I do not know why inserting 'source /etc/profile' was
necessary to get the /opt paths loaded.

It's because /sbin/init doesn't source /etc/profile. Sourcing it from ~/.xsession, /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession, or by starting xdm with /etc/rc.d/xdm all give the same result; the environment variables are set according to /etc/profile by the time your desktop is started.

There is no such file as /etc/rc.d/xdm in my system.
